Women's Soccer Drops Heartbreaker in 2OT

Flash Points:
  • Gabi Morales (Madrid, Spain/Colegio La Inmaculada-Marillac) stretched her goal scoring streak to three games, scoring both SFU goals
  • Julia Hernan (Pottstown, Pa./The Hill School) made nine saves for the Flash
  • The Pioneers scored with 70 seconds left in the second overtime

FAIRFIELD, CONN.- Gabi Morales (Madrid, Spain/Colegio La Inmaculada-Marillac) struck for two more goals but the Sacred Heart Pioneers scored with just over a minute left in the second overtime to defeat SFU 3-2 on Friday afternoon at Campus Field.

Caitlyn Buckley collected a rebound off a Julia Hernan (Pottstown, Pa./The Hill School) save and put it into the left side of the net for the game winning goal in the 109th minute of play. The loss drops SFU to 3-2 in NEC play while Sacred Heart is now 3-1-1.

Both sides withstood early pushes in the match on Friday. Morales was stopped twice in the first 10 minutes of the match while Hernan made one of her nine saves and two more shots were blocked in a Pioneer rush in the 16th minute. Morales put SFU on the board in the 22nd minute, taking in a Leah Hardin (Aberdeen, Md./Aberdeen) feed. The junior was on the receiving end of a give-and-go with Hardin and made a quick move before firing one into the left side of the net to make it 1-0. The Pioneers looked to even the score quickly, pushing for the equalizer right after the goal. Hernan made two saves and another two shots went high as the match crossed the half hour mark. In the 38th minute a header pass from Olivia Crema fourn Maranda Gibbons who found space inside the six-yard box and scored her first goal of the season to tie the match at one. The teams went to the locker room tied at a goal each.

Sacred Heart grabbed the lead in the 62nd minute of the match as Emily Dawidcyzk, who had entered as a sub just five minutes prior, took in a Lindsay Corallo pass and was able to put it into the right side to give Sacred Heart their first lead at 2-1. The lead lasted all of 14 seconds. Right off the re-start, Saint Francis earned a foul in the goal box and Morales converted the penalty kick to tie the match at 2. Each team would get two shots on goal in the final 28 minutes but neither could beat the respected keeper and the match would go to extra time.

Hernan was called on to make two saves in the first overtime and the Flash fired two shots wide. With both teams also unable to convert a corner kick, the match went to a second overtime. After both teams again missed chances with shots going wide of goal, Sacred Heart found the golden goal in the final minute of play. The Pioneers held a slight edge in overall shots, 21-18 and in shots on goal, 12-8. SFU will look to rebound on Sunday and spoil Bryant's senior day as they travel to Rhode Island to face the Bulldogs. Match time is set for 3 p.m., following the men's match between the schools.
