LORETTO, PA-Â Saint Francis scored early and never let off the gas in a 5-0 win over the Wagner Seahawks on senior day at the Stokes SoccerPlex.Â
With Fairleigh Dickinson falling 2-1 at Mount Saint Mary's and Sacred Heart drawing 1-1 against Bryant, Saint Francis wins the regular season and will host the tournament next weekend.Â
"This was a great team win today, obviously we are excited to host," coach
Brenda van Stralen said. "These kids, this team fought hard all season long and earned this right."
The Red Flash scored early in this one as
Sara Suler (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) pumped in a shot to the top corner off a
Gabi Morales (Madrid, Spain/Colegio La Inmaculada-Marillac) feed in the fourth minute. The Wagner keeper was drawn off her line and Suler connected from 25 yards out. SFU kept on the attack, scoring again in the 18th minute.
Alyssa McGhee (Altoona, Pa./Bishop Guilfoyle) collected a loose ball in the goal box, avoided two defenders and scored with a low shot into the right corner to make it 2-0.Â
Hernan made her biggest save of the game moments later when Megan Fritz got free off a set piece and Hernan stopped a point blank shot just in front of the six-yard box to keep Wagner off the board. On the counter-attack off the save,
Sara Suler (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory)'s shot was blocked down, resulting in a corner kick. Morales played a low cross to a streaking
Siobhan Bross (Danville, Pa./Danville Area) who found space and buried a one-timer into the top corner to make it 3-0. SFU would take the 3-0 lead into the halftime break.Â
In the second half, the Flash connected for their fourth goal of the match when
Abigail Tarosky (North Huntington, Pa./Norwin) put a well-placed cross into the box and
Leah Hardin (Aberdeen, Md./Aberdeen) headed it home for her second goal of the weekend. Tarosky set up the final tally as well as her shot in the 72nd minute was stopped but the rebound went right to
Shannon McGinnis (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) who tapped it into an empty net. Hernan would turn aside two more Wagner chances late in the match and secured her sixth shutout of the season.Â
Overall,the Flash out shot Wagner 25-4 and 14-3 in shots on goal. It was a great send-off for the two Red Flash seniors
Casey Gallaher (Sidman, Pa./Forest Hills) and
Abbey Collins (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville), who were honored in a pre-match ceremony. Saint Francis will be the #1 seed in next weekend's tournament and will face #4-seed Fairleigh Dickinson. Sacred Heart and Central Connecticut will meet in the other semi-final.Â
