Women’s Volleyball Fights Off Knights for First NEC Win

LORETTO, Pa. – The Saint Francis women's volleyball team earned their first conference win of the season, 3-2, against Fairleigh Dickinson on Sunday at DeGol Arena. The Flash took the fifth and deciding set, 15-11.
 
Kelsey Roush (Johnstown, Pa./Richland) led three scorers in double-digit kills with 14. Breanna Opera (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster ) and Sophie Murdock (Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion ) added 12 and 13 kills, respectively. Jenna Veres (Independence, Ohio/Padua Franciscan) finished with a match-high 24 digs, while Roush added 19. Amelia Metzler (Littleton, Colo./Chatfield) tallied 30 assists and 15 digs. Cecilia Esposito (Coraopolis, Pa./Montour) led the Flash with four total blocks.
 
A pair of Roush kills highlighted a 5-0 run by Saint Francis (5-19, 1-9) to take a 7-3 lead in the opening set. FDU (3-26, 1-10) closed the gap to 8-6 but SFU answered with five straight to lead 13-6. Saint Francis scored five of the last six points to take the set, 25-15.
 
The Flash picked up with where they left off in the second set. SFU pulled out to a 5-0 lead to start the set. The Knights would fight back to cut the deficit to one at 12-11. The rest of the set would remain close with neither team able to gain much of a lead, until Saint Francis put together a 4-0 run to create some separation at 22-18. FDU would continue to claw back. The Knights again would pull within one at 22-21. A pair of Opera kills would put the Flash ahead, 24-21. A Roush kill sealed the set, 25-23.
 
In the third and fourth set, the momentum started to shift in favor of FDU. The Knights ran away with both sets 25-12 and 25-9.
 
In a back-and-fourth fifth set, the Flash used a 3-0 run to turn an 8-6 deficit into a 9-8 lead. FDU would come back to tie the set at 9-9 but SFU scored four unanswered to take a 13-9 lead. The Flash capped the match victory with an Opera kill to win, 15-11.
 
Saint Francis is back in action on Friday when they host Robert Morris for Senior Day.
