SFU Shuts Out Sacred Heart in NEC Opener

Flash Points:
  • Jack Webber (Bernville, Pa./Tulpehocken) scored an unassisted goal in the 49th minute
  • Marcus Rojas (Fremont, Calif./Bellarmine College Preparatory) made one save in the win
  • SFU remains unbeaten at Sacred Heart all-time

FAIRFIELD, CONN- Jack Webber (Bernville, Pa./Tulpehocken) knocked in a deflection in the 49th minute and the Red Flash made the goal stand up in a 1-0 win over Sacred Heart in SFU's conference opener.

Saint Francis was bottled up by the Pioneer defense in the first half, as they were limited to just two shots in the first half, neither on goal. Dominic Ramirez (Johnstown, Pa./Westmont Hilltop) nearly made it 1-0, but his header sailed just over the crossbar in the 13th minute. Sacred Heart had chances, including four corner kicks in the first eight minutes, but the Red Flash held Sacred Heart to just one shot on goal, a header that was handled by Marcus Rojas (Fremont, Calif./Bellarmine College Preparatory). With neither team able to get any momentum going offensively, the match went to the half scoreless.

In the 47th minute, Jack Webber (Bernville, Pa./Tulpehocken) gathered in an attempted Sacred Heart clear off a Red Flash throw in. The senior chipped the ball over the Pioneer keeper and into the net to give Saint Francis the 1-0 lead. Pedro Neto (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil/Instituto Nossa Senhora Da Gloria) nearly made it 2-0 in the 53rd minute but Robert Strain made one of his two saves of the match. The Red Flash defense stymied the Pioneers the rest of the match. SFU did not let a shot get on goal in the second half, holding SHU to three shots, blocking two. SFU kept the play in the middle of the field, and moved to 1-0 in the NEC as a result.

Sacred Heart out shot SFU 9-7 overall but the Red Flash had three of the four shots on goal. The victory moves SFU to 8-4 overall and 1-0 in conference while Sacred Heart falls to 2-7-2 overall and is 0-2 in the NEC. Saint Francis hosts a pair of matches next weekend to open up their conference home schedule. Saint Francis Brooklyn is up first on Friday afternoon. Match time is set for 2 p.m.
