- SFU out scored the Bonnies in the second half
St. Bonaventure, N.Y.- Jamaal King (Salisbury, Md./Bishop O'Connell (Va.)) scored a career high 21 to lead five players in double figures but the Red Flash second-half comeback fell short in a 92-82 setback in Saturday's season opener at the Reilly Center.
"I was really proud of the way we competed out there today," coach
Rob Krimmel said. "There were a few points where the game could have gotten away from us, but I like the way we battled back, at the same time, there's room to get better."
A run in the second half by the Bonnies extended a 12-point halftime lead out to 18 before the Flash went on a 19-3 run to close the gap to three, but that was as close as Saint Francis could get in the second half.
Josh Nebo (Houston, Texas/Cypress Lakes) finished with a near double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds before fouling out. He got the Flash off to a quick start with a three-point play on the opening possession of the game. The two teams would trade baskets early on before a three by
Georgios Angelou (Halkida, Greece/Lykeio Kanithou) and a bucket by
Deivydas Kuzavas (Kretinga, Lithuania/St. Mary's Ryken (Md.)) sparked a quick 5-0 run to give the Red Flash their largest lead of the game at 16-10. The Bonnies responded with a 10-0 run of their own before the squads went back to trading baskets. Saint Bonaventure would get hot down the stretch in the first half, hitting their last five shots to open a 12-point halftime lead. The Red Flash would trail 51-39 after 20 minutes.
Jamaal King (Salisbury, Md./Bishop O'Connell (Va.)) paced the Flash, scoring 15 of his 21 in the first half.
Saint Francis would come out cold to start the second half, scoring just eight points in the first eight minutes as the Bonnies extended the lead out to 18. It would be the freshman that jump started the offense in the second half as SFU began to chip away at the Bonnies' lead. Kuzavas hit a jumper followed quickly by baskets from
Keith Braxton (Glassboro, N.J./The Lawrenceville School) and Randall Gaskins Jr.. An Angelou three cut the lead to single digits at 69-60 with nine minutes to go. The Red Flash defense helped to fuel the rally, limiting SBU to just a pair of Jalen Adams baskets over a five-minute stretch, he led all scorers with 23 on the night. Braxton's lone three of the night was followed by a pair of King free throws as the lead was trimmed to 69-66.
The Flash would get the lead back down to one-possession one more time at 75-72 on a
Isaiah Blackmon (Charlotte, N.C./West Charlotte) lay-up but threes on back-to-back Bonaventure possessions proved to be just enough on Saturday. The Bonnies were able to extend the lead back out to 10 and run out the clock.
Gaskins Jr. and Braxton had 12 and 11, respectfully in their college debuts while Angelou added 11 points and a team high four assists. The Bonnies' Jaylen Adams and Denzel Gregg led all scorers with 23 points each while the Bonnies Idris Taqqee had a game-high 12 rebounds.Â
Overall the Flash shot 47 percent for the game on 25-53 shooting and was 9-17 from three (52 percent). The Bonnies shot just over 50 percent on 32-62 shooting and were 7-23 from deep (30.4 percent). SBU held the slight edge on the glass 33-32 but the Flash held a 15-13 advantage on second-chance points. The scoring balance for Saint Francis was evident with five players in double figures and 22 points coming off the bench. Saint Francis will continue their road trip through the Atlantic-10 on Wednesday when they travel to Pittsburgh to take on Duquesne. Tip time between the Dukes and the Red Flash is set for 7 p.m.
