BROOKLYN, N.Y. – St. Francis Brooklyn converted on a penalty-kick in double-overtime to defeat the Saint Francis men's soccer team, 1-0, in the Northeast Conference Championship at Brooklyn Bridge Park on Sunday.
In the double-overtime period, St. Francis Brooklyn's Yussuf Olajide was awarded a penalty in the 18-box to give the Terriers a penalty-kick in the 107th minute. SFBK claimed the NEC title,1-0, after Lukas Hauer converted on the PK to defeat SFU.
Saint Francis controlled the tempo early as the offense kept the ball in the defensive zone for the opening eight minutes.
Brendan McGhee (Pickering, Ontario, Canada/St. Mary's Catholic) had the first scoring opportunity for SFU but his shot was blocked by an SFBK defender. Moments later,
Dominic Ramirez (Johnstown, Pa./Westmont Hilltop) fired off a shot that sailed wide. In the ninth minute, the Flash earned a corner kick and a header by
Pedro Neto (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil/Instituto Nossa Senhora Da Gloria) missed wide.
Troye Kiernan (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) made a pass to McGhee waiting in the box but Roberto Bazzichetto made a diving stop to reject McGhee. Kiernan had chance, heading a cross from a
Francis de Vries (Christchurch, New Zealand/Cashmere) free-kick that traveled high. It would remain scoreless entering the half. SFU dominated the stat sheet in the first half, outshooting SFBK, 9-4, and held a 3-1 advantage in corners.
The SFU defense faced early pressure from SFBK as the Terriers earned two penalty corners in the opening minutes of the second half. The Flash stood their ground and denied the Terriers of cracking the scoreboard. In the 60th minute, Kiernan created space and got a shot off but it was once again deflected by a St. Francis Brooklyn defender. The Terriers gained momentum with under 10 minutes remaining in the second half, recording three shots.
Marcus Rojas (Fremont, Calif./Bellarmine College Preparatory) made a pair of key saves, denying a pair of SFBK penalty corners to keep it 0-0 heading into the first overtime.
For the eighth time since 2002, the NEC Championship would be decided in overtime. Neither team could create scoring opportunities in the first overtime as the stalemate would continue. Saint Francis' best chance in the first overtime was on a penalty corner but could the Flash could not generate any chances.
After the match,
Jack Webber (Bernville, Pa./Tulpehocken), de Vries and McGhee were named to the All-Tournament Team. The Red Flash finish the season officially at 12-6-2.
