BROOKLYN HEIGHTS, N.Y. – The Saint Francis women's volleyball team dropped a five-set decision to St. Francis Brooklyn on Sunday in the season-finale at the Genvesi Center. Saint Francis fell 25-17, 18-25, 25-21, 25-21 and 15-12.
Sophie Murdock (Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion ) led three players in double-figures kills on Sunday. Murdock added 14 while
Christa White (Rochester, N.Y./Spencerport) and
Breanna Opera (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster ) both recorded 10.
Amelia Metzler (Littleton, Colo./Chatfield) dished out 40 assists while
Jenna Veres (Independence, Ohio/Padua Franciscan) contributed with a team-high 17 digs.
The first set started as a back-and-fourth affair, with Saint Francis eventually taking an 11-7 lead. The Terriers started to chip away at the Red Flash lead, scoring three unanswered points to pull within one at 12-11. Two kills by Opera capped a 4-0 run to give SFU an 18-13 advantage. SFU would score four of the last five points to cruise to a 25-17 win.
St. Francis Brooklyn jumped out to an early second-set lead and led wire-to-wire. The Flash would quickly erase a 16-11 deficit and would only trail by one at 16-15. SFBK responded with three-straight points to take control of the set at 19-15. A kill by Aleksandra Gligroric gave the Terriers the second set, 25-18.
Both teams traded points early in the third set, with the Terriers pulling out to a 10-6 lead. SFU would score seven of the next eight points to pull ahead, 13-11. However, the SFU lead would be short lived. A Metzler kill ended a 6-0 by the Terriers and would spark a short run by SFU to put the Flash within two at 20-18. The Terriers would go on to score the last three points to take the third set, 25-21.
Set four started streaky as SFU would jump out to a commanding 9-3 lead. The Terriers would eventually comeback to tie the set at 14-14 and would take a 16-15 lead. With the set tied at 17-17, SFBK ran off with three-straight points to take a 20-17 lead. Two service aces by
Emily Marcinowski (Strongsville, Ohio/Padua Franciscan) capped a 6-0 run for SFU to close the set, 25-21.
SFBK tried to gain momentum early in the fifth and deciding set by taking a 4-2 lead. The Terriers reeled off three-straight points to lead 7-4. Both teams would trade point's midway through the set, with SFU winning two critical points to tie the match at 10-10. The Flash would make the score 13-12 but the Terriers would score the last two points to win the set and match, 15-12.
The Flash finish the season 5-22.
