LORETTO, Pa. – The Saint Francis men's basketball team meets Duquesne on Wednesday night in the A.J. Palumbo Center for a 7 p.m. tipoff. The game will be broadcast on the Atlantic 10 Digital Network.
The Red Flash fell 92-82 at St. Bonaventure last Saturday. SFU will meet another Atlantic 10 team on Wednesday, with Duquesne entering the game with a 1-1 record.
NOTES FROM ST. BONAVENTURE
- Five Saint Francis players scored in double figures on Saturday, led by
Jamaal King (Salisbury, Md./Bishop O'Connell (Va.))'s 21 points. It's the first time SFU has had five players in double figures in a season opener since November 18, 2006 against Lock Haven. SFU had five guys in double figures in four different games last season.
- Freshmen
Randall Gaskins, Jr. (Woodbridge, Va./Bishop O'Connell (Va.)) and
Keith Braxton (Glassboro, N.J./The Lawrenceville School) had 12 and 11 points, respectively, in their college debuts.
Georgios Angelou (Halkida, Greece/Lykeio Kanithou) and
Josh Nebo (Houston, Texas/Cypress Lakes) each had 11 points.
- The Red Flash hit 9-of-17 from three (53 percent), with King connecting on four threes and Angelou contributing three of his own.
SERIES HISTORY
Duquesne leads the all-time series, 62-13, including a win last year, 67-65, at the Johnstown War Memorial. Saint Francis earned a 67-53 win at Duquesne on December 17, 2014.
TEAM CAPTAINS
Senior guard
Georgios Angelou (Halkida, Greece/Lykeio Kanithou), sophomore guard
Jamaal King (Salisbury, Md./Bishop O'Connell (Va.)) and sophomore forward
Josh Nebo (Houston, Texas/Cypress Lakes) were selected as team captains for the 2016-17 season.
Angelou is one of three seniors on the roster and will move into a bigger role this season after being a key contributor off the bench last season. He led SFU with a 47.4 three-point percentage, while averaging 3.6 points and a rebound per game in 2015-16.
King will look to provide leadership at the point guard position. After joining the team in Mid-December last year, King played in 17 games, including a start at Mount St. Mary's. He averaged nine minutes per game and totaled 35 points, 12 rebounds, 10 assists and five steals.
Nebo started 29 games last year and made a big impact, especially on the boards and at the rim. He recorded 59 blocks, the second-most in a season at SFU, and already ranks ninth on the career blocks list at SFU. Nebo was second in the NEC, averaging 1.87 blocks per game. He averaged 4.9 points and 5.1 rebounds, while totaling six double-digit scoring performances and three games with double-digit rebounds. He also had 10 games with three or more blocks.
NEWCOMERS
The Red Flash welcomed five new players to the roster in 2016-17. Freshmen guards Randall Gaskins Jr. and
Keith Braxton (Glassboro, N.J./The Lawrenceville School) and freshman forward
Deivydas Kuzavas (Kretinga, Lithuania/St. Mary's Ryken (Md.)) join juniors
Deon Baker (Pittsburgh,Pa/Gateway) and
Tre McKeithen (Pittsburgh, PA/Taylor Allderdice) as the newcomers for SFU.
Gaskins, Jr. played at Bishop O'Connell high school in Virginia, where he was teammates with
Jamaal King (Salisbury, Md./Bishop O'Connell (Va.)). Gaskins averaged over 10 points per game his senior year.
Braxton was a First Team All-New Jersey selection in his final year of prep ball, playing at The Lawrenceville School, where he averaged 18 points per game.
Kuzavas was a WCAC Honorable Mention selection as a senior at St. Mary's Ryken in Maryland.
Baker comes to Loretto after two years at the Community College of Beaver County, where he averaged 10.5 points per game, while McKeithen joins the team after serving as a manager last season.
YOUNG TEAM
Eleven of the eighteen players on the Saint Francis roster are freshman or sophomore eligibility.
Of the 10 players who appeared in the St. Bonaventure game, seven were freshmen or sophomores.
Sophomore
Isaiah Blackmon (Charlotte, N.C./West Charlotte), Braxton, Gaskins Jr., King, Kuzavas, sophomore
Scott Meredith (Pilot Mountain, N.C./Hargrave Military Academy (Va.)) and Nebo combined for 66 of the team's 82 points (80.5%) and 149 minutes of playing time against the Bonnies. Gaskins played a team-high 29 minutes, while King played 28 and Nebo was in for 22 minutes.
ABOUT THE DUKES
Duquesne is 1-1 this season, coming off an 82-74 loss at Penn State on Sunday. The Dukes opened the season last Friday with a 65-60 win over Loyola (Md.).
Sophomore guard Tarin Smith, a transfer from Nebraska, led the team with 13 points, while graduate guard Emile Blackman and freshmen guards Mike Lewis II and Spencer Littleson each had eight points for the Dukes.
Duquesne shot 41 percent from the field against Penn State, eight threes on the day. Lewis II, who earned Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week honors, led the team with 19 points on 6-of-13 shooting, while senior center Darius Lewis added 12 points, going five-of-six from the field.
The Dukes are coached by Jim Ferry, who is in his fifth season leading the program.
