FLASH POINTS:
  • Saint Francis welcomed 350 elementary school kids to the game for education day
  • SFU placed five players in double figures led by Maya Wynn (Reisterstown, Md./McDonogh)'s 23
  • Ace Harrison (Baltimore, MD/Digital Harbor (Maryland)) led the Flash with a game-high 14 rebounds
  • The Red Flash held a 24-10 edge in second-chance points

LORETTO, PA- Saint Francis used a balanced attack and a strong second half to knock off the Canisius Golden Griffins 95-74 on Education Day inside DeGol Arena.

SFU out scored Canisius 52-31 in the second half to pull away from the Griffins breaking a five-game losing streak to Canisius and a two-game losing streak this season.

Saint Francis jumped out to a quick 7-2 lead off a Maya Wynn (Reisterstown, Md./McDonogh) three and buckets by Harrison and Jessica Kovatch (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg). The Red Flash extended the lead out to eight in the opening stages on a Courtney Zezza (Plum, Pa./Plum) three pointer and extended the lead out to double figures on a pair of Cydney Smith (Port Tobacco, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) buckets. A late Griffin run trimmed the SFU lead to six and the Flash led 26-20 after the opening 10 minutes.

The Griffins carried that momentum over into the second quarter, running off a 6-0 run to tie the score and took their first lead on a three by Lauren D'Hont, who finished with a game-high 24. The teams traded baskets back-and-forth in the quarter with the lead changing hands six times with four ties mixed in as well. One of four Ace Harrison (Baltimore, MD/Digital Harbor (Maryland)) steals late in the half set up another Zezza three that sent the teams into the locker room tied at 43.

The Flash attacked the basket early and often in the second half, getting driving lay-ups from Kovatch and Samiah Bethel (Jacksonville, Fla./Potter's House Christian Academy) to re-take the lead. SFU began to pull away in the third quarter and stretched the lead out to nine after five-straight points from Zezza, who finished with 15 points, five rebounds and two blocks off the bench. Wynn's fourth triple of the game followed another bomb from Katie Reese (Boonton Township, N.J./Mountain Lakes (Manhattan)) as SFU led by as many as 17 in the third quarter and took a 71-55 lead into the final frame. SFU shot 60 percent in the third including four three-pointers. The big difference came on the defensive end, holding Canisius to just 29 percent from the floor (5-17) and out rebounding them 14-6.

Canisius would cut into the lead and get into single digits with a 7-0 run to start the fourth. However, the Flash had an answer on Tuesday, countering back with a pair of buckets to push the lead back out to double figures. Late threes by Kovatch and Reese extended the lead out to 20 and the Flash improved to 2-2 on the season while Canisius falls to 1-3.

Taking a quick look at the box score:
Saint Francis shot the ball well, 38-77 for 49 percent while Canisius was 26-64 for 40.6 percent. SFU was a perfect 6-6 from the foul line while the Griffins were 17-26. The Flash placed five players in double figures as Wynn (23), Reese (18), Kovatch and Zezza (15) and Harrison (12). Wynn's 23 points are a career high. Each team forced 16 turnovers with Canisius holding an 18-13 edge on points off turnovers. The Flash had nine blocks with Harrison and Smith each with three.
