LORETTO, Pa. - The Saint Francis men's basketball team placed four players in double-figures to earn an 87-72 win over Longwood on Wednesday night at DeGol Arena. Â The Red Flash kept up its hot-shooting to start the season, with a 60 percent clip against the Lancers. Â Saint Francis improved to 2-2 on the year, while Longwood dropped to 1-3.
Saint Francis was led by freshman guard Keith Braxton (Glassboro, N.J./The Lawrenceville School), who recorded his first career double-double, with 17 points, on 8-of-11 shooting, and 12 rebounds to go with five assists. Â Sophomore forward Josh Nebo (Houston, Texas/Cypress Lakes) hit 7-of-9 shots for 15 points, including 13 in the second half, six rebounds and four blocks. Â Sophomore guard Jamaal King (Salisbury, Md./Bishop O'Connell (Va.)) added 15 points, nine assists and four steals, while freshman guard Randall Gaskins Jr. contributed 11 points, on 4-of-4 shooting, three assists and four steals.
Senior guard Georgios Angelou (Halkida, Greece/Lykeio Kanithou) added nine points, on three three's, while sophomore forward Ifeanyi Umezurike (Uturu, Abia State, Nigeria/Montverde Academy (Fla.)) had eight points and seven boards and sophomore guard Andre Wolford (Willowick, Ohio/Saint Ignatius) contributed seven points.
With two blocks in the first half, Josh Nebo (Houston, Texas/Cypress Lakes) tallied the 64th and 65th of his career, passing Will Felder (2009-11) for seventh all-time at SFU.
The Red Flash hit 36-of-60 shots for 60 percent on the night, including six threes. Â SFU also out-rebounded the Lancers 37-28, including 22-10 in the second half. Â SFU assisted on 20 of its 36 shots and recorded 13 steals.
Longwood shot 44 percent (26-of-59), including 54 percent from three (13-of-24). Â Guard Darrion Allen had 21 points, including five three's, and forward Khris Lane added 17 points, with four three's, and nine rebounds. Â Forward JaShaun Smith had 14 points, seven rebounds and three assists.
The Red Flash closed the first half on a 20-2 lead to take a 42-25 lead into the break. Â Trailing 23-22 with 6:01 left in the half, a layup by Ifeanyi Umezurike (Uturu, Abia State, Nigeria/Montverde Academy (Fla.)), off an assist from Jamaal King (Salisbury, Md./Bishop O'Connell (Va.)) sparked the run. Â Umezurike added a layup off an offensive rebound to push the SFU lead to four, 27-23. Â Randall Gaskins Jr. then took over, scoring seven of SFU's next nine points, including three jump shots. Â Andre Wolford (Willowick, Ohio/Saint Ignatius) added three points and Keith Braxton (Glassboro, N.J./The Lawrenceville School) had two. Â King had four points during the run, with a layup ending the half.
Saint Francis shot 61 percent in the half, with nine assists on 17 made shots. Â King led SFU with 13 points at the half, making 5-of-10 from the field, and added five assists and three steals. Â Gaskins Jr. contributed eight points and four steals, while Georgios Angelou (Halkida, Greece/Lykeio Kanithou) hit a pair of threes. Â
Nebo scored 10 points in the first 4:44 of the second half, helping SFU to a 14-7 advantage to start the half. Â SFU's lead grew to 56-35 with 15:16 left. Â
Saint Francis' largest lead of the game came with 11:29 left in the game, on a layup by Wolford to push the advantage to 65-40, which capped a 17-5 run. Â The run also included six points from Nebo, a three from Scott Meredith (Pilot Mountain, N.C./Hargrave Military Academy (Va.)) and layups by Braxton and Umezurike.
A 16-4 run by Longwood cut the SFU lead to 11, 73-62, with 5:31 to go. The stretch included three three's from Lane and another trey by Allen.
Threes by Gaskins and Angelou, as well as a layup by Nebo and a dunk by Braxton, over a defender, helped SFU get back to a 17-point lead, 84-67, with two minutes to go. Â Â Â Â
