Cold Start Does in Flash Against the Hawks

Flash Points:

- SFU placed six players in double figures led by Kovatch's 17

-Halee Adams (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Bishop Guilfoyle (Sienna)) led a balanced rebounding attack with seven

-A first-half MD-ES run proved to be the difference

BOCA RATON, FLA- The Saint Francis Red Flash placed six players in double figures but a late fourth quarter run was not enough in a 90-82 setback to the Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks at the Florida Atlantic Holiday Tournament.

The Maryland-Eastern Shore Hawks used a first-quarter run and held the Flash to just 4-18 shooting in the first quarter to jump out early. The Hawks led 16-5 at the first media timeout and continued to hold a double-digit lead for much of the first half, leading 24-13 after the first quarter. Saint Francis was able to cut the lead to eight on a pair of Katie Reese (Boonton Township, N.J./Mountain Lakes (Manhattan)) threes but could not get closer in the half.  The run forced a Hawks' timeout, but they answered the Red Flash run with a pair of baskets on consecutive possessions to push the lead back out to double figures. MD-ES was efficient on offense and slowed the tempo. The Hawks hit on six-of-nine threes while shooting 53 percent in the second quarter. The Flash trailed 44-29 at the half.

Saint Francis traded baskets with the Hawks in the third quarter, never getting closer than 13. The Hawks were able to control the clock and the Flash went scoreless for almost three minutes as the lead grew. Jumpers by Maya Wynn (Reisterstown, Md./McDonogh) and Taylor Allison (State College, Pa./State College) snapped the cold shooting but MD-ES took a 68-47 lead into the final frame. In the fourth quarter, Saint Francis began to heat up. The Flash went for 35 in the fourth quarter, cutting the lead to single digits on the back of a 12-1 run. It would prove to be too little too late as the Hawks picked up their fifth win of the season while the Flash dropped to 3-6.

Jessica Kovatch (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) had a game high 17 while Keyera Eaton led the Hawks with 15. Both teams had balanced scoring as five Hawks reached double figures. Saint Francis will look to snap a two game losing streak when they take on the Jackson State Tigers in the third-place game on Saturday afternoon. Tip time is set for 5 p.m.
