LORETTO, Pa. – The Saint Francis men's basketball team dropped a 75-63 decision against Stony Brook on Saturday at DeGol Arena. The Red Flash fell to 3-6 on the season, while the Seawolves improved to 4-7.
The Red Flash shot 35.6 percent from the field, hitting 21-of-59 shots, including 8-of-22 from three (36.4 percent). Sophomore guard
Jamaal King (Salisbury, Md./Bishop O'Connell (Va.)) led Saint Francis with 16 points on 5-of-10 shooting. Freshman guard Randall Gaskins Jr. contributed 11 points on four-of-nine from the field, while sophomore guard
Isaiah Blackmon (Charlotte, N.C./West Charlotte) added 10 points, also on four-of-nine shooting. Freshman guard
Keith Braxton (Glassboro, N.J./The Lawrenceville School) collected an SFU season-high 19 rebounds and added three assists.
Stony Brook hit 26-of-63 shots (41.3 percent) from the field, including 12-of-28 from three (42.9 percent). Senior guard Lucas Woodhouse had 17 points, with nine rebounds and nine assists. State College native Bryan Sekunda added 17 points off the bench, hitting five threes. Junior Saintel contributed 15 points, six rebounds and four blocks.
The Red Flash trailed 40-34 at halftime. SFU shot 42 percent (13-of-31), with five threes. Blackmon had 10 points in the first half, while Gaskins, Jr. and King each added eight points and senior forward
Patrick Wrencher (West Chester, Ohio/Archbishop Moeller) had six points. Woodhouse has 14 points for Stony Brook and Saintel added nine.
The Seawolves had 11 of the game's first 16 points, leading 11-5 with 14:12 to go in the half. Tyrell Sturdivant had four of the 11 points, with a jumper and two free throws. Kamreron Mitchell and Woodhouse each hit threes and Roland Nyama had a free throw.
Saint Francis cut its deficit to five, 21-16, with 9:50 left in the half after a quick 7-2 run. Wrencher hit a layup and a jumper and Blackmon added a three.
However, a 14-3 run by Stony Brook pushed its lead to 16, 35-19 with 6:03 left. Woodhouse had nine points during the run, including two threes and completing a three-point play. Saintel had the other five points, with a three and a dunk.
The Red Flash closed the half on a 15-5 run, with Gaskins Jr. scoring the first five points of the run. Gaskins Jr. added a three, while Blackmon contributed five points during the stretch and Wrencher added a layup.
Stony Brook scored nine of the first 14 points of the second half, pushing its lead to 49-38 with 16:11 remaining. The stretch included five points from Sturdivant, a dunk by Saintel and a layup by Nyama. SFU responded by scoring the next six points, with three coming from Gaskins, Jr.
Sekunda then went on a personal 11-0 run to extend Stony Brook's lead to 60-44 with 11:56 to go. The junior hit three threes and a pair of free throws.
Saint Francis answered with an 8-0 run to bring the lead back down to eight, 60-52, with 10:07 remaining. Senior guard
Georgios Angelou (Halkida, Greece/Lykeio Kanithou) hit a three and sophomore guard
Scott Meredith (Pilot Mountain, N.C./Hargrave Military Academy (Va.)) had five points, with a three and two free throws.
SFU then had six of the game's next 10 points to pull within six, 64-58, with 4:32 to go. King had four of SFU's six points, while
Ifeanyi Umezurike (Uturu, Abia State, Nigeria/Montverde Academy (Fla.)) hit two free throws.
A 7-0 run by Stony Brook pushed the Seawolves lead back to 13, 71-58, with a minute to go to seal the win. The run included a three by Sekunda and a dunk by Saintel.
The Red Flash hits the road for two games next week. Saint Francis faces Marquette on Monday, December 19 with a 7 p.m. ET tipoff at the Bradley Center. That game will be broadcasted on FS1. Saint Francis will then travel to Texas A&M on Wednesday, December 21 for an 8 p.m. tipoff on SEC Network-Plus.
