Tribe Hold off Red Flash Second Half Comeback

Flash Points:

-Jessica Kovatch (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) led the way with 28 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals

-The Flash out scored the Tribe 23-7 in the third

-SFU limited William and Mary to one field goal in the third quarter

Williamsburg, VA- Jessica Kovatch (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) had 28 points but the William and Mary  Tribe held off a furious second-half comeback to knock off the Red Flash 73-60 on Tuesday night.

The Red Flash stormed back with a 17-4 third quarter run fueled by the Red Flash defense. SFU held William and Mary to 1-14 from the field in the third quarter and forced five turnovers. They whittled the Tribe's 21-point halftime lead down to three in the frame as Jessica Kovatch (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) had 13 of her 28 in the frame.

However, the Flashes' momentum was killed by the end of the quarter and the Tribe scored a pair of quick baskets early in the fourth quarter. The Flash ran out of gas in the final frame hitting on just two of their final 14 shots. William and Mary was able to grind out a few key possessions and milk the clock.

The Tribe jumped out on the Red Flash early on Tuesday scoring the game's first eight points. A Cydney Smith (Port Tobacco, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) traditional three-point play got the Flash offense going but William and Mary's hot shooting staked them to the early lead. Threes from Kovatch and Halee Adams (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Bishop Guilfoyle (Sienna)) brought Saint Francis closer but an 18-4 edge in the paint and eight SFU turnovers that led to 10 points as SFU trailed 27-15 after the first quarter.

William and Mary would extend the lead out to 22 in the second quarter before the Flash chipped away at the lead over the final five minutes. A Kovatch jumper and an Ace Harrison (Baltimore, MD/Digital Harbor (Maryland)) bucket cut the lead to 15 before a pair of late baskets gave the Tribe a 52-31 halftime advantage.

It would prove to be too much to overcome as the aforementioned comeback fell just short. The Flashes' intensity showed throughout the game on both sides of the ball and became just the second team to top 60 points against the stingy Tribe. The Flash out scored William and Mary 29-21 in the second half and blocked 11 more shots.

William and Mary's big advantage came with a 36-18 edge on points in the paint led by Abby Rendle's 17 points and 13 rebounds. They also forced 20 SFU turnovers, converting them into 22 points, but only three in the second half. For the Flash, Halee Adams (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Bishop Guilfoyle (Sienna)) chipped in nine and Maya Wynn (Reisterstown, Md./McDonogh) added eight to go along with three steals. Ace Harrison (Baltimore, MD/Digital Harbor (Maryland)) came off the bench to lead the way with eight rebounds and added a block and a steal.

Saint Francis ends non-conference play at 3-8 while William and Mary improves to 1-9. The Red Flash will take the rest of the holiday week off before preparing for the start of Northeast Conference play. SFU opens on the road at Fairleigh Dickinson on December 29th, tip next Thursday is set for 5:30 p.m.
