Men’s Basketball Falls 81-58 At Texas A&M To Close Out Non-Conference Play

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Saint Francis men's basketball team fell 81-58 at Texas A&M on Wednesday in Reed Arena.  The Red Flash outscored the Aggies, 39-35, in the second half, but dropped to 3-8 on the season.  Texas A&M improved to 8-3.  It was the final non-conference game for both teams.
 
The Red Flash shot 38 percent from the floor, hitting 21-of-55 shots, including 8-of-25 from three (32 percent).  Saint Francis shot 54 percent in the second half, with 14 makes in 26 attempts, including 6-of-12 from three.
 
In his return to his native Texas, sophomore forward Josh Nebo (Houston, Texas/Cypress Lakes) had 11 points, including four dunks, and a team-high seven rebounds.  Freshman guard Keith Braxton (Glassboro, N.J./The Lawrenceville School) also had 11 points, hitting four-of-six shots, with two rebounds, two assists and two steals.  Sophomore guard Jamaal King (Salisbury, Md./Bishop O'Connell (Va.)) contributed eight points as one of 12 Red Flash players to score in the game.
 
Texas A&M hit 51 percent of its shots (29-of-57), including a season-best 53 percent from three (10-of-19).  The Aggies also hit 13-of-20 free throw attempts. 
 
Forward DJ Hogg led five Aggies in double-figures with 15 points.  He added five rebounds, five assists and three blocks.  Center Tyler Davis contributed 14 points, on five-of-eight shooting, six boards and a block.  Freshman Robert Williams had a double-double off the bench, with 10 points and 10 rebounds to go with three assists and four blocks.  Admon Gilder and JC Hampton had 10 points each for A&M.
 
The Red Flash trailed 46-19 at halftime, with a Braxton three at the buzzer sending the game into the break.  Saint Francis shot 24 percent from the floor, hitting 7-of-29 attempts, including just 2-of-13 from three.  Braxton and Nebo each had five points in the half, with Nebo's coming on two dunks and a free throw.  Scott Meredith (Pilot Mountain, N.C./Hargrave Military Academy (Va.)) added three points, with Randall Gaskins Jr., King and Andre Wolford (Willowick, Ohio/Saint Ignatius) each contributing two.
 
JC Hampton led the Aggies with 10 points in the half, hitting a pair of threes and four free throws.  Tonny Trocha-Morelos had nine points and Admon Gilder tallied eight points.  The Aggies shot 48 percent from the field (13-of-27), including 7-of-12 from three (58 percent) and hit 13-of-16 free throws (81 percent).
 
The Aggies set the tone with a 13-2 run to start the half.  Trocha-Morales had six of the 13 points, with Hampton completing a four-point play and Gilder hitting a three.  Braxton had two points for SFU during the stretch and a Nebo putback dunk ended the run.
 
However, Texas A&M responded with a 15-3 run to take a 28-7 lead with 9:12 remaining.  That run included six points from Williams and four from Davis.  Hogg contributed three and Gilder hit two free throws.  A jumper by King ended the run, with Nebo adding a dunk and a free throw 44 seconds later to cut the deficit to 30-12.
 
After a 9-0 run by the Aggies, the teams each scored seven points in the final five minutes of the half.  Gaskins Jr. hit a jumper and Wolford hit two free throws, after being fouled on a three-pointer, and Braxton hit a three at the buzzer to close the half.
 
The Red Flash came out hot in the second half, beginning the half with a 9-2 run.  The stretch included threes by Braxton, King and Gaskins.  The three by Gaskins cut the deficit to 20, 48-28, with 17:30 left.  Nebo added a layup 43 seconds later to give SFU 11 points in the first 3:13 of the half. 
 
With Isaiah Blackmon (Charlotte, N.C./West Charlotte)'s three with 15:13 left, ending a 6-0 A&M run, the Red Flash had hit four of its first six three attempts of the half. 
 
The teams traded short runs the rest of the half, including a 7-0 run by SFU, starting on a three by King with 4:35 to go.  Deivydas Kuzavas (Kretinga, Lithuania/St. Mary's Ryken (Md.)) added a putback layup and Nebo threw down his fourth dunk of the day, off a lob by King. 
 
SFU closed out its scoring for the half on two free throws by Daniel Wallace (Suffolk, Va./Nansemond River) and a layup, turned into a three-point play, by Deon Baker (Pittsburgh,Pa/Gateway).
 
Braxton, King and Nebo each had six points in the second half, while Georgios Angelou (Halkida, Greece/Lykeio Kanithou) added five.  Baker, Blackmon, Gaskins Jr. and Patrick Wrencher (West Chester, Ohio/Archbishop Moeller) each had three points.
 
The Red Flash begins NEC play next Thursday, December 29, when it visits Fairleigh Dickinson.  Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Stratis Arena on NEC Front Row.  Saint Francis completes the road trip at Sacred Heart on Sunday for a 3:30 p.m. tipoff.
