MOON TWP., Pa. –
Ronnie Drinnon (Jamestown, Ohio/Greenview) recorded his 13
th double-double of the season and fourth in a row as the Saint Francis men's basketball team won at Robert Morris, 68-57, on Thursday night. Drinnon had 17 points and 16 rebounds.
Ben Millaud-Meunier (Montreal, Quebec/Vanier) scored 14 points, and his three three pointers put him over 200 makes for his career.
The game was primarily defined by three runs. Two of those went in the Red Flash's favor. After Robert Morris opened the game with a 14-8 lead less than five minutes into play, the Flash outscored the Colonials 21-8 over a nine-minute stretch to take a 29-22 lead.
Basil Thompson (Philadelphia, Pa./Imhotep Charter) scored seven points in that time, and his three-point play directly preceded three Millaud-Meunier free throws to cap that run. Thompson scored 10 of his 12 points in the first half, and Millaud-Meunier scored 12 of his 14 in the first half.
"I thought to start the game we didn't do a great job of executing our game plan," head coach
Rob Krimmel said. "We didn't get guys to spots. As a result, we turned the ball over way too much. It allowed Robert Morris to get out and play in transition. Once we settled in and were able to withstand that first run, I thought we did a good job executing."
Saint Francis took a 38-29 lead into the break. SFU came into the game with a 10-1 record when leading at the half, but it would have to withstand a Robert Morris run to make it 11-1.
The Red Flash's nine-point halftime lead turned into a three-point deficit as SFU scored just three points in the first 8:35 of the second half. A seven-plus minute drought in that time allowed the Colonials to go on a 12-0 run to take a 44-41 lead with 12:32 to play. Drinnon converted a three-point play to tie the score, but Kavon Stewart put the Colonials back ahead by a bucket, 46-44, with 10:08 to play. And that's when the decisive run went in the Flash's favor.
Saint Francis went on a 16-3 run over the next six minutes with Drinnon and
Georgios Angelou (Halkida, Greece/Lykeio Kanithou) scoring the final 13 points on that streak. A Thompson layup tied the score, and Angelou put the Flash back up, 49-46, with a three pointer. Drinnon scored the next eight points for SFU on three layups and two free throws, and Angelou capped it with another three pointer. When that shot fell, Saint Francis had a 60-49 lead with just 4:22 to play.
Angelou scored a career-high 11 points, including eight in the second half. Drinnon had a double-double in the second half alone, posting 11 points and 10 rebounds in the second half.
"Nothing really changed [from the first half]," Drinnon said. "It's just about trying to come out with a consistent effort for as long as Coach has me in there. It's just playing with that same intensity through two halves and being relentless on the boards."
Freshman
Josh Nebo (Katy, Texas/Cypress Lakes) had four more blocks to give him 39 for the season. That moved him from a tie for sixth place all the way into third on the school's single-season blocks list.Â
Saint Francis earned its first regular season sweep of Robert Morris since the 2000-01 season. The win snaps an eight-game losing streak at Robert Morris and is the team's first win there since the 2007-08 season.
Saint Francis went 15-for-16 (93.8 percent) from the free throw line, its highest percentage from the stripe this season when shooting at least 10 foul shots. Saint Francis outrebounded Robert Morris, 35-31, and moved to 12-3 in such games this season.
Saint Francis now moves on to face Mount St. Mary's on the road on Saturday. The game will begin at 3 p.m. following the women's game between the two schools.
