STATEN ISLAND, NY- Saint Francis put four players in double figures including a career-high 16 point, 12 rebound, four block effort from
Courtney Zezza (Plum, Pa./Plum) in an 87-74 comeback win over Wagner at the Spiro Athletic Center on Monday.
Jessica Kovatch (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) led the way for Saint Francis with 24 points and seven rebounds, but it was Zezza's effort off the bench that provided the needed spark for the Red Flash on Monday.
"Courtney (Zezza) had a great game, hit her shots today," Coach
Joe Haigh said. "But I loved her effort defensively, she helped control the paint and did a great job on their drives to the basket."
The first quarter got off to a frenetic pace, with Wagner hitting early shots. The Seahawks connected on their first three attempts and slowly built a lead. The Flash struggled shooting in the first quarter, going 6 of 22 as Wagner led by as many as nine in the quarter. But much like Saturday, SFU closed the quarter strong, scoring five-straight points in the quarter's final 20 seconds, led by an
Aisha Brock (Jacksonville, Fla./Potter's House Christian Academy) three to cut the Seahawk lead to 22-18 after the first quarter.
Saint Francis' run continued into the second quarter, tying the game on a
Halee Adams (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Bishop Guilfoyle)' jumper and a Zezza bucket, her three started the run as SFU rallied to tie the game at 22. The teams would trade the lead throughout the quarter as the game was tied four times and had four lead changes. Wagner grabbed the lead late in the quarter on a three-point play and a frantic last possession for the Flash led to a
Brielle Ward (Baltimore, Md./Western (Hampton U)) buzzer-beating lay-in, Wagner led 38-37 at the half.
The Red Flash started the second half on a 9-1 run that gave them a lead they would not relinquish. Two threes by
Maya Wynn (Reisterstown, Md./McDonogh) and a third by Kovatch led the run. Wynn finished with 17 on the night. The Red Flash defense put the clamps on the drive and kick Wagner offense, holding them to just one field goal in the first seven minutes of the quarter. The Seahawks finished the game with 34 points in the paint, but just 14 after the first quarter.
"We really adjusted well to the Seahawk offense after the first quarter," Haigh added. "It was part of the game plan and we re-adjusted after that first quarter and that helped to slow them down."
The Flash built a double-digit lead thanks to the Wagner drought, a three and a lay-up by Kovatch pushed and held the lead in double figures, where it stayed until the final seconds of the quarter. A late Seahawk bucket made it 63-55 SFU after three quarters.
The Saint Francis' lead would be no less than six in the fourth quarter as they consistently answered the Wagner offense.
Aisha Brock (Jacksonville, Fla./Potter's House Christian Academy) matched Jasmine Nwajei shot-for-shot in one stretch in the period, keeping the lead at 11. Brock finished with eight, while Nwajei, the NCAA's leading scorer had 38. The Flash feasted on the glass today, out rebounding Wagner 54-42, including 27-13 on the offensive end. That led to 19 second-chance points including late buckets from Wynn and Ward that put the game away.
Ward finished with a game-high 13 rebounds while Zezza added 12. The Flash forced 22 more turnovers again on Monday, leading to 17 points.
The win moves the Red Flash to 11-14 overall and 9-5 in the NEC while Wagner falls to 4-21 and 2-12 in conference. Saint Francis next hosts LIU Brooklyn on senior day and Think Pink day. Tip time is set for 4 p.m. following the men's game between the teams.
