Women's Basketball Puts Five in Double Figures in 85-68 Win

LORETTO, PA-Maya Wynn (Reisterstown, Md./McDonogh) tied a career high with 21, leading five players in double figures in a 85-68 victory over St. Francis Brooklyn on Monday night.

With the win, the Red Flash earned their 11th conference win of the season, securing a home game in the NEC tournament.

SFU moved the ball well on Monday night, racking up 22 assists on 30 field goals led by Katie Reese (Boonton Township, N.J./Mountain Lakes) who dished out seven helpers. They also succeeded in speeding up the Terriers, forcing 23 turnovers leading to 27 points for the Flash and 16 on the fast break. The well-rounded scoring effort was highlighted by a 40-5 edge in bench points for the Flash as three players came off the bench to reach double figures.

It was St. Francis Brooklyn who started quickly, hitting on their first two three attempts to lead 6-0 early. The Terriers led 8-3 with 8:19 remaining in the first quarter. Over the next five minutes, the Flash then went on a 14-0 run sparked by threes from Wynn, Aisha Brock (Jacksonville, Fla./Potter's House Christian Academy) and Courtney Zezza (Plum, Pa./Plum). Saint Francis closed the first on a 20-6 run overall, and took a 26-12 lead into the second quarter. The Flash scored 17 points off turnovers during the quarter-closing run.

The Terriers would get no closer than 10 the rest of the way. The Flash drained 16 threes on Monday, consistently answering a Brooklyn basket with one of their own. Midway through the quarter, the Flash blew the game open, going on a 10-0 run to make it a 42-21 contest. Another Wynn three and a traditional three-point play by Reese highlighted the spurt. The Red Flash would take a 45-29 lead into the locker room.

The Red Flash momentum carried over into the second half where Aisha Brock (Jacksonville, Fla./Potter's House Christian Academy) started to heat up. She hit threes on consecutive possessions that stopped a brief Terrier run and stretched the lead back out to 16. Brock finished with 19 points on 7-10 shooting. The Flash post players got going in the third as well. Courtney Zezza (Plum, Pa./Plum) and Cydney Smith (Port Tobacco, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) each hit threes and followed up with buckets in the post, Zezza finished with 11 points and Smith 10 on Monday. Saint Francis never let SFBK back into the contest, holding the lead around 15 points the entire second half. After a slow start, Jessica Kovatch (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) got going in the fourth, scoring eight of her 10 points. The freshman also had three rebounds for the Flash. Both teams would empty their bench late in the contest as the Flash cruised to the victory.

The 22 assists for the Red Flash are the most in a game since they racked up 26 in the 106-74 win over Coastal Carolina. The Terriers out rebounded the Flash 43-28 but the Flash held a 9-5 edge in second-chance points. Leah Fechko led all scorers with 27 points while Cassidy Derda led everyone with nine rebounds. For the Flash, Brielle Ward (Baltimore, Md./Western (Hampton U)) had a team-high six rebounds while Halee Adams (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Bishop Guilfoyle), Aisha Brock (Jacksonville, Fla./Potter's House Christian Academy) and Cydney Smith (Port Tobacco, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) each had three steals.

The victory moves SFU to 13-14 overall and 11-5 in the NEC while SFBK falls to 7-20 overall and 4-12 in conference. The Flash hit the road for the final time in the regular season, traveling to Sacred Heart and Robert Morris. The Pioneers of Sacred Heart are up first, tip time is set for 1 p.m. on Saturday.
