LIVE AUDIO (WWGE)LORETTO, PA- The Red Flash women's basketball team wraps up their regular-season home schedule when they host the St. Francis Brooklyn Terriers tonight at 7 p.m. at DeGol Arena.
ABOUT THE FLASHSaint Francis honored seniors
Aisha Brock (Jacksonville, Fla./Potter's House Christian Academy),
Brooklyn Taylor (Greenville, Pa./Greenville), and
Brielle Ward (Baltimore, Md./Western (Hampton U)) prior to Saturday's game and earned a 72-64 victory over LIU Brooklyn to move to 10-5 in the Northeast Conference.
Jessica Kovatch (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) had 29 points and seven rebounds to lead the Flash, who used a pair of 7-0 runs in the second half to secure the win. The Flash held LIU Brooklyn scoreless for over four minutes in the fourth quarter and forced 23 turnovers on Saturday, including 13 steals. The Red Flash also set a program-record with 12 blocked shots in the game, including four each from
Courtney Zezza (Plum, Pa./Plum) and
Cydney Smith (Port Tobacco, Md./St. Mary's Ryken). The victory secured the first two-game sweep of the Blackbirds for the first time since the 2010-11 season.
At 10-5, the Flash's magic number is one to clinch a top-four seed and a home game in the opening round of the NEC tournament. Any combination of a Red Flash win and CCSU loss will clinch the top-four seed (SFU has the tiebreaker over FDU).
ABOUT THE TERRIERSSt. Francis-Brooklyn is coming into Loretto playing very well, winning three of their last four games. Last week, SFBK knocked off Bryant at Bryant on Monday and won at Robert Morris on Saturday in overtime. At 4-11 in the NEC, the Terriers are just a game behind Mount Saint Mary's for the eighth spot in the NEC tournament. The two teams will meet on Saturday in Brooklyn. The Terriers are led by Leah Fechko, the senior guard leads the team in points, rebounds and assists. The senior had 20 points, 10 rebounds, 5 assists, and 5 steals in the Flash's 83-76 win over SFBK back in January. Maria Palarino, the Terriers' second-leading scorer, had 16 points against SFU. The Terriers have allowed teams to shoot 44 percent from the field this season, last in the NEC. The Red Flash shot 48 percent from the field in the win back in January.
ABOUT THE MATCHUPThe Red Flash own a 40-17 all-time lead in the series and this will be the 58th meeting between the teams. The Red Flash's win back in January snapped a four-game slide against the Terriers. Saint Francis will look to end a two-game home losing streak to SFBK, the last SFU win in the Battle of Francis in Loretto was in the 2012-13 season, a 64-53 triumph.
LOOKING AHEADSFU will hit the road for the final weekend of the regular season. Saint Francis will match-up with a pair of NEC Tourney bound teams in Sacred Heart (currently 1st) and Robert Morris (currently 4th).
