Men’s Basketball Loses at Sacred Heart, 88-78

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Saint Francis men's basketball team wrapped up the regular season with a loss at Sacred Heart on Saturday afternoon, 88-78. The three Red Flash seniors all finished in double figures with Greg Brown (Odenton, Md./Archbishop Spalding) leading the way with 21 points. Ronnie Drinnon (Jamestown, Ohio/Greenview) recorded his 17th double-double of the season with 17 points and 18 rebounds. Ben Millaud-Meunier (Montreal, Quebec/Vanier) scored 12 points.

After trailing by 11 at halftime and by as many as 13 early in the second half, the Red Flash (13-16, 9-9) pulled even thanks to a couple of scoring spurts. Down 49-36 in the first minute of the second half, SFU scored seven straight points to cut the deficit to six. Layups from Drinnon and Brown preceded a three pointer from Millaud-Meunier to make it 49-43 with 17:52 left.

A jumper by Jordan Allen again pushed the lead to double figures at 58-47 with 14:54 to play, but Saint Francis went on a 14-3 run over the next four-plus minutes to pull even. Millaud-Meunier started the run with another three pointer. After a Josh Nebo (Katy, Texas/Cypress Lakes) dunk and a basket by Allen at the other end, Patrick Wrencher (West Chester, Ohio/Archbishop Moeller) scored twice in less than 30 seconds to make 60-56 with 12:29 left. After a Sacred Heart free throw, Jamaal King (Salisbury, Md./Bishop O'Connell) hit a three pointer and Drinnon hit another layup to tie the game at 61 with 10:38 to play. Wrencher had a season-high six points.

When the score was tied at 65, however, Sacred Heart again pulled away with a 13-1 run that lasted for nearly five minutes to put the game out of reach at 78-66 with just 4:06 remaining. Saint Francis brought the game back into single digits just once more on a Georgios Angelou (Halkida, Greece/Lykeio Kanithou) three pointer to make it 80-71 with 3:12 left.

Drinnon surpassed Norm Van Lier for 12th place on the school's all-time rebounding list. He now has 782 rebounds, just 10 shy of tying Earl Brown (Philadelphia, Pa./Imhotep Charter) for 11th place. His 17 points on Saturday give him 950 for his career. Millaud-Meunier's 12 points give him 979 for his career.

The team has made 213 three pointers this season, moving into fifth place on the school's single-season list. The school record is 238, set by the NEC Championship team of 1990-91.

The Red Flash is seeded seventh in the NEC Tournament and will play at Fairleigh Dickinson on Wednesday night.

"The goal with any season is to reach the NCAA Tournament," head coach Rob Krimmel said. "You can't do that without first reaching the conference tournament. We allowed ourselves to do that with a fast start in NEC play. I'm confident that our senior leadership will have us ready to go as we prepare for what amounts to a new season."
