FDU Eliminates Men’s Basketball in NEC Tournament

TEANECK, N.J. – The Saint Francis men's basketball team saw its season end after falling in a thrilling NEC Tournament quarterfinal game at Fairleigh Dickinson on Wednesday night. The Knights won, 74-72. Senior Ronnie Drinnon (Jamestown, Ohio/Greenview) capped his career with a team-high 21 points. He also had a career-high 22 rebounds, a new NEC Tournament record.

Fellow seniors Greg Brown (Odenton, Md./Archbishop Spalding) and Ben Millaud-Meunier (Montreal, Quebec/Vanier) joined Drinnon as the Red Flash's three double-digit scorers. Brown scored 15 points while tying his career high with eight rebounds. He also had five assists. Millaud-Meunier had 10 points. He finishes his career with 989 points. Drinnon stops with 971.

The three seniors all made plays in their final collegiate game. Millaud-Meunier scored all 10 of his points in the first half as SFU took a double-digit lead. He had two more three pointers to give him 212 in his career, third most in school history. The second of those threes came in the final minute of the period to cap a 7-0 run that pushed SFU into the intermission with a lead that it would hold through the opening portion of the second half.

Drinnon pulled in 15 of his 22 rebounds in the second half. If there was ever a sequence to define him as a player, it came in a sequence with just under four minutes to play in regulation. Brown and Malik Harmon (Queens, N.Y./Christ the King) had just hit back-to-back three pointers to give SFU a 71-68 lead, with Harmon's coming as the shot clock expired. On FDU's next possession, Drinnon pulled down the defensive rebound to start the possession. On the offensive end, he had three straight offensive rebounds to keep the possession alive.

The Flash didn't score on that possession, and Fairleigh Dickinson responded with back-to-back three pointers of its own to take a 74-71 lead with 1:58 to play. While SFU couldn't score in the next few trips, FDU couldn't seal the game as it missed the front end of two one-and-one situations at the stripe.

That's where the senior leadership and smarts of Brown came into play. After being fouled with five seconds left, the Academic All-District selection made the first free throw to make it 74-72. He missed the second, just grazing the rim to give Drinnon a chance at the loose ball rebound. That rim graze changed the ball's trajectory just enough to land it on the end line before Drinnon could save it. Although FDU missed its two free throws at the other end, SFU didn't have enough to time to get a legitimate shot at tying or winning the game.

The supporting cast played a big role, too. Josh Nebo (Katy, Texas/Cypress Lakes) had a tip-in and a dunk on two straight possessions to kick-start a 12-2 run in the first half that put the Red Flash ahead, 33-23. Nebo had seven points, five rebounds and four blocks. He finishes his freshman season with 56 blocks. Not only is that the second-most blocks in a single season in SFU history, he's just three blocks away from breaking into the school's top-ten list for blocks in a career.

Patrick Wrencher (West Chester, Ohio/Archbishop Moeller) played 12 minutes off the bench to tie his career high with seven points. He scored six of them in the first half. Georgios Angelou (Halkida, Greece/Lykeio Kanithou) completed a four-point play to give the Flash an early lead just before it went on the 12-2 run.

Harmon's three pointer as the shot clock expired with 4:07 to play put SFU ahead by three. While it didn't stick, that shot showed why the junior – now just two points shy of 800 in his career – will be a force with the ball in his hands as a senior.

As for Drinnon, he not only set the NEC Tournament record with 22 rebounds, he surpassed the 800-rebound plateau in the game. With 804 rebounds, Drinnon is one of just 10 players to reach 800 or more boards. He passed Earl Brown (Philadelphia, Pa./Imhotep Charter) (2012-15) and Don Falenski (1955-59) to move into 10th place all-time.

As a team, the Red Flash won three straight road games for the first time since the 1980-81 season. SFU also swept Bryant for the first time ever and swept Robert Morris for the first time since 2000-01.
