No. 15 Men's Volleyball Defeats Charleston in Regular Season Finale, 3-0

CHARLESTON, W.V. – The No. 15 Saint Francis men's volleyball handled the University of Charleston Golden Eagles, 3-0, in the regular season finale on Saturday night at the Charleston Catholic Athletic Complex. The Flash swept the match, 25-17, 27-25 and 26-24.

Saint Francis ended the regular season with an 18-9 record – which is the most wins in a season since 1995 -- and the most wins under head coach Mike Rumbaugh. The Flash finished with a 9-5 record in the EIVA, while the Golden Eagles finished the season with a 4-24 record and 0-14 in the conference.

Stephen Braswell (Manchester, Pa./Northeastern) led the Flash with 13 kills. Jeff Hogan (Northern Cambria, Pa./Northern Cambria) finished with 12 kills and 14 digs, while Xavier Krause (Butler, Pa./Butler) added nine kills and three service aces. Gabe Woffindin (Allentown, Pa./William Allen) tallied 17 digs, Drew Grehan (Virginia Beach, Va./Frank W. Cox) registered three total blocks and Ray Frazer (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg) dished out 34 assists.  

The Flash got off to a slow start in the opening set, as the Golden Eagles took a 4-1 advantage. Thanks to four attack errors by Charleston, Saint Francis would go on a 4-0 run to take a 5-4 lead. The set would remain close until SFU scored six-straight points to pull out to a commanding 17-10 lead. A Charleston service error gave Saint Francis the set, 25-17.

Charleston jumped out to an early 8-5 lead in the second set. Both team would trade points throughout the set. A Krause kill highlight three unanswered points from the Flash to take a 20-19 lead. With the Flash on the verge of closing out the set, the Golden Eagles scored three-straight points to tie the score at 24-24. A Charleston service error and a Hogan kill sealed the set for the Flash, 27-25.

In a hard-fought third set, both teams exchanged points early. SFU complied four-straight points to take an 11-8 lead. The Golden Eagles would rally to tie the score at 15-15 and 16-16. Charleston would take a three-point lead at 19-16. Saint Francis answered with a 5-1 run to lead, 22-21. The Flash scored the last four points to close out the set and match, 26-24.

Saint Francis will be the No. 4 seed and will face top-seeded Penn State on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at Rec Hall at Penn State in the first round of the EIVA playoffs. This will be Saint Francis' first appearance in the EIVA tournament since 2011.
