BALTIMORE, MD- The Red Flash dominated the second half of play but couldn't find the net as a first half Greyhound goal stood up in the Flash's 1-0 loss to Loyola (MD) on Thursday night.
"You cannot play one half of a match and expect to win, that's not going to work," head coach
Brenda van Stralen said after the match.
Saint Francis out shot Loyola 10-3 in the second half but could not find the equalizer in their third match of the season. The Flash sustained early pressure after an early flurry from Loyola that was thwarted with a Hernan save.
Alyssa McGhee (Altoona, Pa./Bishop Guilfoyle) put a shot on target that was stopped by Lily Andres and
Shannon McGinnis (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) put another attempt wide in the 23rd minute of play.
Minutes late, the Greyhounds scored what ended up being the lone goal of the match. A loose ball in the Red Flash's defensive end caused a scramble that Loyola capitalized on. Maddie Hart won a race to the ball against Hernan and scored with the keeper off her line to make it 1-0 in the 30th minute.
SFU defended a trio of set pieces that followed the goal and looked to counter at the end of the half.
Sara Suler (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) put a shot just high off a
Gabi Morales (Madrid, Spain/Colegio La Inmaculada-Marillac) corner kick on the last scoring chance for either team before the half.
McGhee had a shot blocked and a
Hannah Marchant (Erie, Pa/Mercyhurst Prep) shot stopped by Andres as SFU started the second half strong. Loyola countered with three consecutive shots as they pushed off a corner kick in the 59th minute. But the Flash defense stood tall, blocking down one shot and Hernan stopping another. The Flash continued to attack midway through the second half with
Siobhan Bross (Danville, Pa./Danville Area) missing just high with a shot and Morales getting stopped by Andres.
Saint Francis earned a pair of corner kicks in the 76th minute but
Allison LaDuke (Greensburg, Pa./Greater Latrobe) had a shot blocked and McGhee put her attempt just wide.
Casey Gallaher (Sidman, Pa./Forest Hills) led the team with four shots, three on goal. Her last came in the 83rd minute but the senior captain was stopped again by Andres. The Greyhounds were able to run out the final few minutes and hold on for the victory.
The Flash stay on the road this weekend, heading to Morgantown, West Virginia for a Sunday match with the #7 ranked Mountaineers. Match time is set for 1 p.m. on Sunday.
