PITTSBURGH, PA-Â The Dukes scored with just 51 seconds remaining in the first overtime to defeat SFU 2-1 on Friday night at Rooney Field.Â
Olav Hovstad headed home a cross past
Marcus Rojas (Fremont, Calif./Bellarmine College Preparatory) late in the first overtime to give Duquesne the win. The Red Flash had opportunities at the start of the overtime but
Mario Mastrangelo (Venetia, Pa/Peters Township)'s shot sailed wide and
Jack Webber (Bernville, Pa./Tulpehocken)'s header was stopped by Evan Kozlowski.Â
The Flash out shot the Dukes 15-11, but the match started with a physical tone with eight fouls being called in the opening 15 minutes of play. Rojas made a pair of saves early and
Stefan Sjekloca (Belgrade, Serbia/Fryeburg Academy) sailed a shot high, but that was the only offense for either team early in the first half. It would be the Red Flash bench that provided a spark.
Dominic Ramirez (Johnstown, Pa./Westmont Hilltop) and
Renan Fuentes (Sao Paolo, Brazil/Colegio Joao XXIII) both checked in with about 10 minutes remaining in the half. Ramirez put a header on goal that was stopped by Kozlowski. The Red Flash then stepped up their defense, blocking down a shot that led to a counter-attack. Fuentes took a
Troye Kiernan (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair)-Ramirez connection and broke through the Dukes' defense. The freshman then fired a shot past Kozlowski's right side for the match's first goal. Fuentes' first collegiate tally came with just 15 seconds remaining in the half as SFU took a 1-0 lead into the break.Â
The Dukes would find an equalizer early in the second half. In the 49th minute, Chris Alescio gathered a loose ball in the goal box and beat Rojas to his right to tie the game at one. The Flash responded with great pressure but none of their three shots in an offensive flurry would find the net as they sailed wide or were blocked down.
In the 69th minute, SFU would earn a pair of corner kicks, but again could not find the target as both Fuentes' and Colin Wurst's attempts were blocked by the Duquesne defense. Rojas was not called on often in the second half, but did make a save and saw two more attempts sail wide towards the end of regulation. SFU put on one last rush in the 89th minute but
Mario Mastrangelo (Venetia, Pa/Peters Township)'s header sailed wide. The extra frame again saw the Flash unable to capitalize on a pair of opportunities before the game winner in the 100th minute from the Dukes.Â
Saint Francis will look to rebound on Monday afternoon when they host the Loyola (MD) Greyhounds. The Greyhounds fell 1-0 to LaSalle on Friday night. Match time from Stokes SoccerPlex is set for 1 p.m..
