MORGANTOWN, W Va.- Shannon McGinnis (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) put away a rebound in the 16th minute and Saint Francis struck first in a 3-1 setback to #7 West Virginia on Sunday afternoon in Morgantown.
"They played their hearts out today," head coach
Brenda van Stralen said. "It was a different attitude than on Thursday, we will use this as another building block towards our end goal."
The Red Flash defense set the tone early, blocking down a pair of West Virginia shots and Hernan making one of her 13 saves in the early minutes. Saint Francis seized the opportunity to counter attack as
Jessica Keller (Sandy Hook, Conn./Newtown) put a shot wide in the 15th minute. The Flash kept pressing, earning a corner kick.
Sara Suler (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) put a header on goal and after a Michelle Newhouse save,
Shannon McGinnis (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) cleaned up the rebound and put it past Newhouse for her first goal of the season. SFU led 1-0 in the 16th minute.
With the Mountaineers looking for the equalizer, the Red Flash defense stepped up. WVU had a pair of set pieces but again the Flash defense blocked a pair of shots and Hernan made two more saves in the scrum. Sh'Nia Gordon found the equalizer in the 30th minute after Hernan made a tough first save, Gordon found the rebound to tie the match at one. The sophomore keeper would make three more saves before the intermission and the teams remained tied at the half.
A lucky bounce gave WVU the lead in the 55th minute. Off a corner kick, Kadeisha Buchanan's header hit the cross bar and managed to cross over the goal line to give the Mountaineers a 2-1 advantage. The Red Flash defense forced the Mountaineers into errant shots as the half wore on. In the 66th minute, the Flash back line cleared a ball off the line after a Ashley Lawrence shot struck the crossbar. The heads-up play kept it a one-goal game.
Another Mountaineer rush ended in futility in the 84th minute as again the SFU defense blocked down a pair of shots and Hernan made her 13th save of the match. WVU would add a late goal off a one-touch to round out the scoring.
The Flash head home for a trio of matches this week at the Stokes SoccerPlex. First up is an exhibition against the Papua New Guinea U-20 National Team. Match time is on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
