TOLEDO, Ohio – The Saint Francis women's volleyball team fell in four sets to Fort Wayne in its final match at the Toledo/ASICS Invitational on Saturday.
Kelsey Roush (Johnstown, Pa./Richland) had 14 kills while
Emily Marcinowski (Strongsville, Ohio/Padua Franciscan) had 13 kills and 15 digs.
Amelia Metzler (Littleton, Colo./Chatfield) posted 39 assists and 17 digs while
Jenna Veres (Independence, Ohio/Padua Franciscan) had 17 digs.
Marcinowski finished the weekend with 32 kills and 28 digs to be named to the All-Tournament Team. She had five of her 13 kills in the Flash's winning second set on Saturday.
Breanna Opera (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster ) also played a big part in that set victory. That set pushed well into extra points, with the Red Flash winning it, 32-30. SFU trailed, 20-15, but scored six straight points to take a 21-20 led. Opera had three of the final four points on that run on kills.
With SFU facing set point, 24-23, Opera had another kill to tie the score. Marcinowski tied the score at 29, and after Fort Wayne took a 30-29 lead, Opera had two kills on the final three-point run for the Flash to give SFU the set victory.
Metzler and
Kelsey Roush (Johnstown, Pa./Richland) had kills in the third set to help SFU pull to within 11-9. But by the time Marcinowski scored later in the set, Fort Wayne had already taken a 20-13 lead. In the fourth set, the teams played evenly through the first 30-plus points as Fort Wayne led, 16-15. But a 7-1 Fort Wayne run put the Mastadons well ahead.
Sophie Murdock (Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion ) and Opera each had kills as SFU pulled to within 23-19, but Fort Wayne scored the last two points to win the set and the match.
Saint Francis opens the home portion of its schedule next Friday in the Red Flash Classic. SFU hosts Eastern Kentucky at 7 p.m.
