Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Dan Griffin

Wright State Tops Women's Soccer 2-0

Flash Points:
  • Julia Hernan (Pottstown, Pa./The Hill School) made six saves on Friday afternoon
  • Alyssa McGhee (Altoona, Pa./Bishop Guilfoyle) led the Red Flash with four shots, three on goal
  • Sarah Colvin and Paige Aguilera each had a goal and an assist for Wright State

LORETTO, PA- Wright State scored a tally in each half and held off the Red Flash attack in a 2-0 setback on Friday afternoon at the Stokes SoccerPlex.

Hernan was on her game early in the match, making two tough saves in the opening stages. Aaliyah Patten hit a rising shot from just outside the goal box that Hernan got a hand on to deflect it away in the seventh minute. The Red Flash immediately countered off the save, earning a Gabi Morales (Madrid, Spain/Colegio La Inmaculada-Marillac) corner kick. The Flash put two shots just wide and Sara Suler (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory)'s attempt was stopped by keeper Katie Ruff in the offense rush.

Patten was at it again in the 21st minute as a shot from 20 yards out deflected off Hernan's hand and off the crossbar, keeping the match scoreless. Minutes later, Aguilera chipped a ball into the box and found Sarah Colvin who one-touched the ball over a charging Hernan for the match's first goal in the 25th minute. Right off the restart, Alyssa McGhee (Altoona, Pa./Bishop Guilfoyle) headed a ball that looked destined for the goal but was headed off the line by the Raiders' defense. McGhee continued to attack as the half wore on, using her speed to turn the corner and get in on the Wright State defense. The freshman put two more shots on goal but Ruff beat the shot to the near post both times. It would be 1-0 Wright State at the half.

The Raiders found the net early in the second half as Colvin's cross found Aguilera on the far side of the goal box and beat Hernan to the back corner in the 55th minute to make it 2-0. SFU found their offensive rhythm as the half wore on and Gabi Morales (Madrid, Spain/Colegio La Inmaculada-Marillac) was stopped on a pair of opportunities and Abigail Tarosky (North Huntington, Pa./Norwin) on a third. Siobhan Bross (Danville, Pa./Danville Area) set up Leah Hardin (Aberdeen, Md./Aberdeen) in the 72nd minute but Hardin's shot beat the keeper only to strike the far post. Off the rebound, Wright State was called for a hand ball in the box. Shannon McGinnis (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) took the shot and rung the shot off the goalie and the near post.

Wright State had one last run of pressure but Hernan made a pair of saves and McGinnis blocked a third shot to stop the rally. The Flash countered back quickly as Morales found Casey Gallaher (Sidman, Pa./Forest Hills) but her one-touch shot sailed just high and was the last scoring threat for either team. The Raiders out shot Saint Francis 19-12 and 8-6 in shots on goal while owning an 8-4 edge in corner kicks. Wright State improved to 1-4 on the season and Saint Francis now sits at 0-5. The Red Flash welcome in the Retrievers of Maryland-Baltimore County on Sunday for a non-conference match. Match time is set for 2 p.m.
