BETHLEHEM, PA- The Lehigh Mountain Hawks scored in the 38th minute and made the goal stand up as Saint Francis fell 1-0 on Tuesday to their in-state rival.
Danny Gonzalez got free on the left side of the goal box and got just enough on the shot to get it past
Marcus Rojas (Fremont, Calif./Bellarmine College Preparatory) after it hit off the senior goalkeepers hands.
A physical game from the start saw neither team give the other a lot of breathing room over the 90 minutes. Lehigh bottled up the Red Flash offense in the early stages of the match, holding them without a shot for the first 30 minutes.
Marcus Rojas (Fremont, Calif./Bellarmine College Preparatory) made two early saves but the best chance in the early going came as
Stefan Sjekloca (Belgrade, Serbia/Fryeburg Academy) missed high on a shot after
Mario Mastrangelo (Venetia, Pa/Peters Township)'s initial shot was blocked down. It was off the counter-attack that Lehigh was able to score, just minutes later.
In the second half, Lehigh sat back and looked to counter, packing the defense with the Flash looking to get the equalizer. The first shot of the half came from
CJ Smolyn (Holland, PA/Germantown Academy) as he split the defense with a skip shot from about 25 yards out that was knocked down by the keeper. The Mountain Hawks continually countered in the second half and an odd-man rush sparked in the 61st minute. A cross found the foot of Oscar Green and Rojas got just enough of the shot to block it down. The rebound found Kevin Klinkenberg, whose follow was destined for the back of the net until a sliding Rojas recovered in time to knock it out of bounds.
Saint Francis' best chance to score came in the 70th minute as a free kick found Mastrangelo for a header, but it sailed just over the cross bar. With the Flash continually pushing forward, Klinkenberg nearly made it 2-0 as he sprung free on a counter-attack in the 82nd minute. His shot from high in the goal box was deflected by Rojas and just missed the far post as it remained 1-0. The Flash had one last shot in the 86th minute but
Pedro Neto (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil/Instituto Nossa Senhora Da Gloria)'s header found too much air and was caught by keeper Will Smith.
Lehigh held the edge in shots 11-10 and in shots on goal 7-3 but it was SFU who held a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks. The loss drops Saint Francis to 6-4 on the year while Lehigh improves to 3-5-1. Saint Francis wraps up the non-conference slate with Howard next Tuesday at the Stokes SoccerPlex. Match time is set for 2:30 p.m.
