McGhee, Rojas Give Men's Soccer 1-0 Win over Cincinnati

Flash Points:
  • Brendan McGhee (Pickering, Ontario, Canada/St. Mary's Catholic) scored early in the first half
  • Marcus Rojas (Fremont, Calif./Bellarmine College Preparatory) earned the clean sheet
  • SFU sits at 2-2 on the season

Cincinnati, Ohio- Brendan McGhee (Pickering, Ontario, Canada/St. Mary's Catholic) tucked a shot from just outside the goal box into the top left corner in the first half and the Red Flash made it stand up in a 1-0 win over the Cincinnati Bearcats.

The Red Flash rebounded nicely from Friday's setback and controlled the match and the Bearcats, holding them to just three shots on goal. Marcus Rojas (Fremont, Calif./Bellarmine College Preparatory) made a save on a header in the 11th minute, the first opportunity for either team in the early goings.

Saint Francis then struck midway through the first half, making the most of their first opportunity. McGhee took a Dominic Ramirez (Johnstown, Pa./Westmont Hilltop) feed up the near side of the field and placed a beautiful shot over the out-stretched arm of the keeper in the 14th minute. The Flash nearly made it 2-0, earning a pair of McGhee corner kicks just minutes later. Nicco Mastrangelo (Venetia, Pa/Peters Township) just missed the far post with a header off the second set piece as the SFU lead remained 1-0. Mario Mastrangelo (Venetia, Pa/Peters Township) had a shot blocked and another stopped by keeper Pedro Diaz as the Red Flash kept up the pressure in the remaining minutes of the first half. It would go to break at 1-0 SFU.

Cincinnati tried to mount pressure in the opening minutes of the second half, earning a pair of corner kicks. Rojas made his second save of the game, tipping a Nick Melville shot wide. UC made another push off a SFU foul as Adam Wilson's shot rang off the post in the 70th minute. The Flash countered off the good fortune and earned a corner kick only to have Jack Webber (Bernville, Pa./Tulpehocken)'s header blocked down. With UC looking for the equalizer, Saint Francis did a solid job controlling the possession in the final minutes of the match. The Bearcats last surge again game off a set piece but Ryan Melink's shot sailed wide of the goal with Marcus Rojas (Fremont, Calif./Bellarmine College Preparatory) in good position.

Rojas made three saves to earn his second clean sheet of the week and the Flash out shot the Bearcats 12-6 overall and 6-3 in shots on goal. The victory moves SFU to 2-2 on the season as they head to State College to meet Penn State next Friday.
