LORETTO, Pa. – The Saint Francis men's volleyball team rallied from a two set to none deficit to force a fifth set but the Red Flash fell, 15-11, to No. 8 Lewis on Saturday night at DeGol Arena. SFU fell, 21-25, 22-25, 29-27, 25-17 and 11-15.
Saint Francis falls to 3-4 on the season, while Lewis improves to 5-1.
The Red Flash were led by
Michael Fisher (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley (Pepperdine))'s 20 kills, while
Stephen Braswell (Manchester, Pa./Northeastern) recorded 17 and
Jeff Hogan (Northern Cambria, Pa./Northern Cambria) chipped it with 11. Fisher finished with a .361 hitting percentage on 36 swings.
Daniel Ford (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North) added 50 assists, while
Gabe Woffindin (Allentown, Pa./William Allen) registered a match-high 12 digs and Braswell added 10. Mitch Perinar led Lewis with 27 kills.
Lewis would jump out to a 8-6 lead in the fifth and decisive set at the midway point, but a
Keith Kegerreis (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg) kill would force a Lewis timeout with the score tied at 8-8. The Flyers would rattle off three straight points to go ahead 14-10. A Saint Francis service error would give Lewis the set and match, 15-11.
Both teams would exchange points in the first set. Hogan would record two straight kills to tie the set at 10-10, but Lewis answered with a 3-0 run to take a 13-10 lead. The Flash would pull within one at 15-14 after a kill from Fisher and an attack error by the Flyers. Lewis would score six of the next eight points to take a 21-16 lead. The Flash was unable to recover and the Flyers would take the set, 25-21.
Saint Francis would hold the lead six different times in the second set but Lewis would storm back to go on a 6-1 run towards the end of the set to win, 25-22.
Lewis would score three unanswered points to break a 6-6 tie to take a 9-6 lead in a back-and-fourth third set. With the Flyers on the cusp of taking the match, a Kegerreis kill would tie the set at 25-25. A Fisher kill capped a 3-0 run for the Flash to take the third set, 29-27.
After Lewis ran out to 6-5 lead in the fourth set, the Flash continued to claw back, using a 6-1 run to take a 15-10 lead. The Flash would stretch its lead to eight at 21-13 after a kill from
Nick Bennett (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East) and an attack error by Lewis. Saint Francis would score the last two points of the set to win, 25-17.
Saint Francis travels to Ohio State for a pair of neutral matches against No. 4 Long Beach State and Barton. Both matches are set for 5 p.m.
