STATEN ISLAND, NY-Saint Francis will look to run their win streak to seven on Saturday afternoon when they travel to Staten Island to take on Wagner at 2 p.m. in a game seen ESPN3.
ABOUT THE FLASH
Saint Francis ran its win streak to six after key home victories over Central Connecticut and Bryant last weekend. The wins move Saint Francis over the 500 mark at 10-9 and moved into a first-place tie with Sacred Heart at 7-1 in the Northeast Conference.
Jessica Kovatch (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) went for 67 points in 69 minutes last weekend over the two games to claim the Northeast Conference Player of the Week award for the second-straight week and third time this season.
Saint Francis' surge in Northeast Conference play has been fueled in part by their defense, who has limited teams to just 69 points per game, 17 points less than their non-conference foes. A big reason is they have held opponents to just 29 percent from three and 37 percent from the field. Another key factor is SFU leads the NEC in blocks, steals and turnover differential. SFU is forcing a league-high 22 turnovers against 16 allowed.
Their offense has kept up their high-octane pace, leading the NEC at 78 points per game, right on par with their non-conference pace. As a result, SFU is a league-leading +8 in scoring through eight conference games.
Saint Francis has had success of late at Wagner. They lead the all-time series 43-21 including a 16-13 edge at the Spiro Center. The Red Flash have not lost on Staten Island since the 2000-01 season, winning the last 14 trips to Grymes Hill.
ABOUT THE SEAHAWKS
The Seahawks come into the contest 1-18 on the season and 0-8 in Northeast Conference play under first-year head coach Heather Jacobs. Kerstie Phills has enjoyed a solid freshman campaign this season that has her averaging 11 points and five rebounds per game. She has parlayed that into four NEC Rookie of the Week awards. Phills has upped her scoring to nearly 16 per game in NEC play, good for fourth in the conference. SFU will also has to contend with Kellie Crouch who has hit 20 threes in conference play, good for third most.
Wagner plays a slowdown style that has them averaging around 50 points per game on the season and 56 per game in NEC play. They are a solid rebounding team that holds opponents to just 34 rebounds per game as they will try to limit the Red Flash to one-shot possessions. They will need to do just that as they commit a season-high 20 turnovers a game while forcing just 12.
BLOCK PARTY
Courtney Zezza (Plum, Pa./Plum) had a career-best eight blocks in the win over Bryant and six against Central Connecticut. Those 14 blocks over the weekend have put her into the top-10 nationally in total blocks (60) and blocks per game (3.16). As a team, SFU is third in the NCAA in blocks (127) and fourth in blocks per game (6.7). Saturday's match-up features the NEC's top two shot blockers as Wagner's Taylor Butigan averages 2 blocks per game.
