Late RMU Surge Downs Flash 70-68

Flash Points:
  • The loss snaps the Red Flash seven-game win streak
  • SFU put four players in double figures
  • The Red Flash sit at 8-2 in the NEC while RMU is 7-3

LORETTO, PA- In a game of runs, Robert Morris had the final surge to pull out a 70-68 battle on Monday night, snapping SFU's seven game win streak.

The Colonials erased a nine-point SFU lead in the fourth quarter and scored nine of the game's final 13 points to pull out the two-point victory. The loss drops Saint Francis to 11-10 overall and 8-2 in the NEC while Robert Morris improves to 12-9 and moves within a game of the Red Flash at 7-3.

Saint Francis raced out of the gate, scoring the game's first six points and led by as many as 10 in the first quarter. Ace Harrison (Baltimore, MD/Digital Harbor (Maryland)) and Maya Wynn (Reisterstown, Md./McDonogh) had the hot hands early, scoring 10 and 9 first quarter points, respectfully and each hit a pair of threes. SFU would lead 24-17 at the end of the first quarter.

Back-to-back three pointers from Jessica Kovatch (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) stretched the lead back out to eight in the early stages of the second quarter, quieting a RMU run. The second Kovtach three was the last basket for the Flash for nearly eight minutes in the second quarter as Robert Morris ripped off an 18-0 run to flip the script and lead 40-30 late in the half. A late Courtney Zezza (Plum, Pa./Plum) lay-in quieted the run but the Colonials outscored SFU 23-8 in the second quarter to lead by eight at the half.

The Flash came out determined in the third quarter, ripping off a 13-5 run to knot the game at 45. Threes by Kovatch and Wynn, plus a Katie Reese (Boonton Township, N.J./Mountain Lakes (Manhattan)) and-one helped fuel the run. Saint Francis kept the momentum on their side out of the media timeout as five-straight points by Katie Reese (Boonton Township, N.J./Mountain Lakes (Manhattan)) gave SFU a 52-47 lead. Samiah Bethel (Jacksonville, Fla./Potter's House Christian Academy) then beat the buzzer with a three to answer Robert Morris' and-one as SFU's third-quarter run gave them a 55-50 lead heading into the fourth.

Ace Harrison (Baltimore, MD/Digital Harbor (Maryland)) and Kovatch again struck from three as the SFU lead grew to nine at 61-52 with seven minutes left. However, Harrison would pick up two quick fouls and fouled out of the game. RMU took advantage, answering back with a 9-0 run of their own to tie the game at 61. Out of the media timeout, Katie Reese (Boonton Township, N.J./Mountain Lakes (Manhattan)) hit another clutch three to put SFU back up three. But RMU would answer and get defensive stops on the next three Flash possessions. The Colonials would get two key baskets late to go up three, but the difference were their three offensive rebounds to keep possessions alive. RMU got two offensive boards on their last possession which lasted 80 of the final 90 seconds. Rebecca Navarro hit a runner in the lane to put the Colonials up five with 10 seconds left. A desperation three by Kovatch drew SFU within two with under a second to go, but RMU was able to inbound cleanly and seal the win.

Anna Niki Stamolamprou scored 27 points for Robert Morris to lead all scorers and moved into second-place on Robert Morris' all-time scoring list. Jessica Kovatch (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) had 19 to lead four players in double figures for SFU. Mikalah Mulrain had 10 points and a game-high 11 rebounds for RMU, who out rebounded the Red Flash 40-31 on Monday night. Each team forced 20 turnovers as SFU turned those into 16 points, the Red Flash also got 14 steals, the sixth-straight game SFU has had at least 10 thefts.

The loss denies SFU their first perfect month since running the table in February of 2005 and snaps their seven-game winning streak. They will look to rebound on Saturday afternoon as they take on the LIU Brooklyn Blackbirds in the Big Apple. Tip from the Steinberg Wellness Center is set for 2 p.m.
