Red Flash suffer 1-0 double overtime loss at CCSU

BOX SCORE New Britain, Conn. - Central Connecticut State forward Jenna Rae Covello found the back of the net with 1:16 remaining in double overtime as the Blue Devils (6-7, 2-2 NEC) handed the Saint Francis women's soccer team (6-7-1, 3-1 NEC) its first conference loss by a score of 1-0.

Turning Point

In a tight defensive battle, it was Covello who found space in the box and buried from six yards out with the Red Flash less than two minutes away from earning a hard-fought road point.

Highlights
  • The Red Flash threatened the Blue Devils goal but couldn't get a shot on target.
  • Freshman Emilee Barnett (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) had a good chance in the first half after she was set up by sophomore Alyssa McGhee (Altoona, Pa./Bishop Guilfoyle) but her shot was blocked by a CCSU defender.
  • Hernan sent the game into the half scoreless with a diving save with 10 minutes to play in the half.
  • With regulation winding down it became evident that one goal would win the match. Sophomore Abigail Tarosky (North Huntington, Pa./Norwin) had the best chance to do so for Saint Francis after McGhee got to the endline and found her on top of the box. The forward hit the shot clean as it was labeled for the side-netting but a CCSU defender got a toe on the ball, deflecting it inches wide.
  • Saint Francis appeared to catch a break when a CCSU header went off the crossbar, but Covello controlled the rebound and beat Hernan for the game-winning goal.
Notes
  • Shots were 20-9 and shots on goal were 10-0 in favor of CCSU.
  • McGhee paced Saint Francis with three shots followed by senior Siobhan Bross (Danville, Pa./Danville Area) with two.
  • Hernan was stellar in goal with nine saves.
  • Saint Francis dropped just its second match in the last seven games.
  • SFU is 1-7-1 on the road.
  • The game was a rematch of last year's NEC Title won 2-0 by the Red Flash.
  • Saint Francis is 0-4-1 in its last five matches deciding in overtime.
