Red Flash Fend off Terriers in Five

BROOKLYN, NY- The Red Flash improved to 3-1 in NEC play and 9-8 overall with a wild five set victory, 25-23, 25-23, 20-25, 20-25, 16-14 win over the Saint Francis Brooklyn Terriers on Friday afternoon.

FIRST SET RECAP
  • This was a back-and-forth affair and the first set was no exception
  • SFU fell behind 13-9 after the Terrier defense force a trio of attack errors
  • SFU trailed for the middle part of the set until a Jenna Veres (Independence, Ohio/Padua Franciscan) ace jumpstarted the offense
  • Alexis Lamber had four kills in the first set and her first tied the set at 18
  • Lambert recorded three more in the final seven SFU points including the set winner as SFU took the first set 25-23
 
SECOND SET RECAP
  • SFBK got off to a white-hot start in the second, forcing a SFU timeout after scoring six of the first seven points
  • Two Kelsey Roush (Johnstown, Pa./Richland) kills and an Emily Marcinowski (Strongsville, Ohio/Padua Franciscan) ace helped to lead a comeback that tied the set at nine
  • From there, the set was tight as tight can be with five ties
  • A Sophia Esposito (Coraopolis, PA/Montour (Gardner-Webb)) kill and an Amelia Metzler (Littleton, Colo./Chatfield) ace gave SFU a 20-18 lead they would not give up

THIRD SET RECAP
  • Again, the Terriers got off to a hot start, leading 5-2 early in the third set
  • The Flash again rallied to tie the match at six behind a Lambert kill
  • The set would be tied three more ties as the teams traded runs and points
  • The turning point of the set came after the Terriers won four of five points to lead 20-17
  • After SFU got back within one at 21-20, the Terriers ran off four-straight points to take set three
 
FOURTH SET RECAP
  • The fourth set was another nail biter as the teams traded the first ten points of the set
  • Neither team could build a lead as the set was tied 10 times through 11 points
  • The Terriers took control of the set at 11-11, scoring five of the next six points to lead 17-12 and forcing a SFU timeout
  • The Red Flash could not get back into the set as the Terriers forced a fifth set at 25-20
 
FIFTH SET RECAP
  • The Red Flash took control of the fifth set early on, a Terrier service error and a Metzler ace got SFU off to a 5-2 start and forced a Terrier timeout
  • SFU kept the pressure on as a kill from Marcinowski and a combo block that involved the senior put SFU up 8-3 at the intermission
  • Saint Francis maintained a five-point lead, happily trading points with the Terriers until it was 14-9 and SFU had five match points
  • To the Terriers' credit, they fought off all five match points, forcing a SFU timeout
  • A Kelsey Roush (Johnstown, Pa./Richland) kill put the Flash on the doorstep for a sixth time in the match at 15-14
