Scouting Longwood
Longwood returns three starters from last year's team in Isaiah Walton, Chris Shields and JaShaun Smith. The trio averaged a combined 26.5 points and 10.4 rebounds per game last season. Walton, who led the way with 13.9 ppg in 2016-17, is off to a hot start with a scoring average of 26.5 points per game through the first two contests. He scored 32 points in the Lancers defeat to Columbia on Tuesday night on 11-17 shooting. Saint Francis will be familiar with two newcomers to the Lancer lineup in Mount St. Mary's transfers B.K. Ashe and Charles Glover. Ashe is second on the team in scoring at 10.5 ppg. Longwood is 0-2 to start the season with losses to Stephen F. Austin and Columbia.
Series History
Last season was the first meeting between the programs with the Red Flash recording an 87-72 victory. The Red Flash shot 60.0% from the field and raced out to a 17-point halftime lead. Keith Braxton recorded his first career double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds and Jamaal King added 15 points and a career-high nine assists.
Early Shooting Woes
Red Flash fans should not be overly concerned with the team's early struggles from three-point range. Despite hitting 7-30 from three-point range (23.3%) in its first two games, Saint Francis returns the same nucleus that led the NEC in three-point shooting last season at 39.1%.
Saint Francis made five or fewer three-pointers just seven times in 34 games last season, boasting a 3-4 record in such games. The Red Flash made three three-pointers in Monday's loss at San Francisco, its fewest since January 2, 2016, and tied its lowest percentage from three-point range from all of last season (16.7%). SFU hasn't shot a lower percentage since a loss at Mount St. Mary's on Jan. 24, 2015.
70-Point Mark
The 70-point benchmark served as a pretty good barometer of SFU's success last season as the team went 16-10 in games in which it scored 70 points or more and just 1-7 when held under 70 points. Its lone win was a 69-62 victory over American. Despite scoring 70 points in 76.4% of its games last season, the Red Flash have been held under 70 in each of its first two games to start the season. That trend could end Saturday against a Longwood team allowing 80.5 points per game.
