LORETTO, PA- Saint Francis put six players in double figures and steadily pulled away from a pesky Pitt-Johnstown squad in a 94-60 exhibtion victory on Thursday night inside DeGol Arena.
The Red Flash were led in scoring by
Jessica Kovatch (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) and her 19 points. The junior also added a team-high four steals. She was joined in double figures by
Maya Wynn (Reisterstown, Md./McDonogh) (13),
Haley Thomas (Hooversville, PA/Bishop McCort) (11),
Ace Harrison (Baltimore, MD/Digital Harbor (Maryland)) (11),
Courtney Zezza (Plum, Pa./Plum) (10) and
Leah Morrow (Columbus, Ohio/Columbus Africentric) (10).Â
FIRST QUARTER RECAP
- The teams traded baskets in the early going with a pair of threes by Wynn and Kovatch putting SFU up 14-11
- An and-one lay-up by Leah Morrow (Columbus, Ohio/Columbus Africentric) gave SFU a six-point advantage at 21-15
- SFU closed the quarter on a 9-1 run capped by a Zezza buzzer beater to lead 25-16 after 10 minutes
SECOND QUARTER RECAP
- Saint Francis got the lead out to double digits on a jumper by Kovatch and a baseline drive by Caitlyn Kroll (Bridgeport, Ohio/Bridgeport)
- SFU maintained a double-digit lead for much of the quarter, jumpers by Wynn and Harrison stretched the lead to its largest of the half at 14
- UPJ would cut the lead back to eight on a three by Alexis Hartwick
- SFU closed the half with four-straight by Haley Thomas (Hooversville, PA/Bishop McCort) as SFU lead 44-32 at the break
THIRD QUARTER RECAP
- The Mountain Cats would cut the lead to six at 46-40, starting the half on a 8-2 run
- Another Thomas three quieted the run and SFU ran the lead out to 12 on a Kyasia Duling (Zanesville, Ohio/New Albany (Duquesne)) drive
- Midway through the quarter the Red Flash ripped off a 12-2 run to stretch the lead out to 18, capped by fast break buckets by Kroll and Kovatch
- Another two fast-break baskets by Morrow and Kovatch as the Red Flash led 72-48 after three
FOURTH QUARTER RECAP
- Threes on consecutive possessions by Courtney Zezza (Plum, Pa./Plum)Â put the Red Flash up 28
- SFU kept the long ball rolling as Wynn and Kovatch cashed in from deep as the lead grew to 30
- The lead hit the high-water mark of 35 on a Morrow and-one
The Red Flash turned 36 turnovers into 47 points, led by 25 steals as seven different players had at least two thefts on the night. They will look to build off the momentum of the win next Friday as they travel to Toledo to take on the Rockets in the opening round of the Women's Pre-Season NIT. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. next Friday.Â
