Football Falls 28-10 At Central Connecticut State

NEW BRITAIN, CONN. – The Saint Francis football team dropped a 28-10 result at Central Connecticut State on Saturday at Arute Field.  Four SFU turnovers led to CCSU scores.  The Red Flash fell to 5-4 overall and 3-2 in the NEC, while CCSU improved to 6-3 overall and 4-0 in conference play.
 
Saint Francis gained 123 total yards, including 91 rushing and 32 passing.  However four turnovers, including an interception and three fumbles, led to all four CCSU touchdowns.
 
Graduate transfer Bear Fenimore (Austin, Texas/Westwood) completed 9-of-17 passes for 31 yards and an interception.  He was sacked five times, with two of those causing fumbles. 
 
Freshman Joel Denley (Beaumont, Texas/West Brook) led the SFU rushing attack with 59 yards on nine carries, while sophomore Avery Miliner (Clayton, Ohio/Northmont) added seven carries for 31 yards and a touchdown.  Junior Kamron Lewis (Fresno, Calif./Edison) led the SFU receivers with four catches for 36 yards.
 
With his four catches, Lewis now has 147 for his career, passing Todd Eckenroad (1991-93) for fifth all-time at SFU.  Lewis is now two receptions away from fourth all-time, held by Omar Winston (2007-10).  Lewis also has 2,431 career yards, 10 behind Antoine Rivera (2005-09) for second all-time at SFU.
 
Sophomore Nick Rinella (Collegeville, Pa./La Salle College) had a major impact in the return game, with three kick returns for 99 yards, including a 46-yard return, and three punt returns for 37 yards, including a 30-yard return.
 
Central Connecticut State tallied 272 yards, including 141 on the ground and 131 through the air. 
 
Quarterback Jacob Dolegala completed 15-of-22 passes for 131 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions.  Drew Jean-Guillaume caught seven passes for 25 yards and a score, while Jose Garcia had four catches for 55 yards.  Cameron Nash rushed for 93 yards and a touchdown on 21 carries and Jean-Guillaume added 21 yards and a score on nine carries.
 
Linebackers Sean Orsini (Imperial, Pa./West Allegheny) and Zane Stewart (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg) led SFU with nine tackles each, with Orsini making 1.5 stops for loss and Stewart having one tackle for loss.  Nose Tackle Jake Beistel (Alverton, Pa./Southmoreland) contributed seven tackles, with 1.5 for loss, and safety Hakeem Kinard (York, Pa./York Catholic) had seven stops.  Safety Delondo Boyd (Indian Head, Md./Henry E. Lackey) had six tackles, half a tackle for loss, and blocked a field goal.  Cornerbacks Malik Duncan (Cleveland, Ohio/Cleveland Central Catholic) and Jalen Wells (Westerville, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) each had an interception, with 22 and 25-yard returns, respectively.
 
Randall Laguerre and Carlton Nash shared the CCSU lead with seven tackles.  Nash had a tackle for loss, a forced fumle and a pass breakup.  Safety Najae Brown had four tackles, an interception, which he returned 38 yards, and a fumble recovery in the end zone for a touchdown.  Linebackers Kenneth Keen and Mike Mushaw each had a strip sack, while Tre Jones, Seth Manzanares and Brandon Puritt each had a sack and Jones added a fumble recovery. 
 
The Blue Devils got on the board on a six-yard run up the middle by Jean-Guillaume.  After a strip-sack by Keen and a recovery by Chad Woodfine at the SFU 10, a pair of runs by Cameron Nash set up the carry by Jean-Guillaume.  SFU trailed 7-0 with 6:58 left in the opening quarter.
 
CCSU extended its lead to 14-0 early in the second quarter on an 11-yard run by Nash.  An interception by Brown was returned 38 yards to the SFU 47.  Nash had six carries on the drive for 46 yards, with his final run going into the end zone.
 
Saint Francis cut the deficit in half, 14-7, with 5:22 left in the second quarter.  A 30-yard punt return by Rinella set up SFU with great field position at the CCSU 15.  Miliner picked up 11 yards on the first play of the drive, following it with a four-yard run up the middle to the end zone.
 
The Red Flash cut the CCSU lead to 14-10 with 8:49 to go in the third quarter.  A short kickoff was fielded by Orsini and a penalty on CCSU moved the ball to the CCSU 48.  A 19-yard run by Denley and a 10-yard run by Miliner helped to setup a 30-yard field goal by Eric Bofenkamp (Warren, Ohio/John F. Kennedy).
 
The Blue Devils extended their lead to 21-10 with 10:02 left in the fourth quarter.  A fumble on a sack by Mushaw was recovered by CCSU's Jones at the SFU 32.  Nash carried the ball six times on the drive for 26 yards.  On second and goal at the seven, Jean-Guillaume caught a screen pass and fought his way into the left corner of the end zone.
 
CCSU pushed its lead to 28-10 with 3:03 remaining in the game.  Denley caught a screen pass in the end zone, but fumbled, which was recovered by Brown for a touchdown.
 
The Red Flash returns to DeGol Field for its final home game of the 2017 season next Saturday, November 11, against Sacred Heart.  Kickoff is set for Noon.  The SFU seniors will be honored as part of Senior Day.  The Pioneers are 3-6 overall and 1-3 in the NEC after a 48-45 loss against Bryant on Saturday.
