SFU GAME NOTES
SPOKANE, WASH- For the first time since the 2011-12 season, the Red Flash are back on the west coast, matching up with the Gonzaga Bulldogs for the second time in program history when they meet Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. PT/ 5 p.m. ET.
The two teams have met once previously, with the Red Flash making the trek out to the northwest six seasons ago, falling 92-50. This time around, it will be a matchup of two teams picked to win their respective conferences. For the Red Flash it would be their 12th title, most in the Northeast Conference while the Bulldogs are predicted to cut down the nets in the West Coast Conference for a conference-best 14th time.Â
ABOUT THE RED FLASH
Fresh off of finals week, the Red Flash have been off since last Saturday, a 79-65 triumph over Youngstown State. The win snapped a three-game losing streak for the Red Flash as they improved to 4-5 on the season. Balance was once again the key,
Jessica Kovatch (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) led three players in double figures with 19 points and five players scored at least eight. SFU got out in transition with 12 fast-break points and dishing out 19 assists on 29 made baskets. The Flash will look to keep that going against the Bulldogs who have allowed just 12 assists per game against forcing 17 turnovers. SFU also did a great job on the glass, out rebounding the Penguins and being plus-7 on second-chance points. Again it was a team effort with five players grabbing at least six rebounds. Hitting the boards against the Bulldogs will be key as Gonzaga has nine players at six-feet or taller on the roster.Â
ABOUT THE BULLDOGS
Gonzaga comes into the contest at 5-4 on the season after a tough 52-50 setback at home to UNLV last weekend. Chandler Smith led the team in points (17) rebounds (8) and assists (2) in the setback to the Rebels. The Zags were without their leading scorer and rebounder Jill Barta, it remains to be seen if she'll be in action on Sunday. The Bulldogs have employed more four-guard lineups this season based around Smith and Barta's versatility, their size and length has give teams problems this season. The Bulldogs have taken care of the basketball, averaging just 14 turnovers a game and thanks to nine steals per game, forcing 17. Gonzaga is averaging 67 points per game, but doing so efficiently on just 59 shots per game. They have struggled from three this season, hitting on just 25 percent of threes and making about four per game. Barta and Smith are their two sharpshooters, each hitting on over 40 percent of threes this season.Â
