Red Flash Can't Zig By Zags

FLASH POINTS
  • SFU put four players in double figures
  • The Red Flash forced 21 turnovers, the second-most for the Bulldogs this season

SPOKANE,WASH- Saint Francis put four players into double figures but a strong third quarter from the Gonzaga Bulldogs proved to be the difference in a  97-74 setback on Saturday afternoon at the McCarthy Athletic Center also known as the Kennel.
 
The Red Flash's defensive pressure gave Gonzaga fits, forcing 21 turnovers and turning them into 23 points. But Gonzaga ruled the glass, out rebounding SFU 54-19 and earning a 24-7 edge on second-chance points.
 
FIRST QUARTER RECAP
  • Jumpers by Caitlyn Kroll (Bridgeport, Ohio/Bridgeport) and Jess Kovatch got the Red Flash offense going with the game tied at four
  • The Red Flash kept pace with the Bulldogs with threes by Kroll and Cydney Smith (Port Tobacco, Md./St. Mary's Ryken), keeping it a one-possession game after a Gonzaga run
  • A Maya Wynn (Reisterstown, Md./McDonogh) steal led to a Kroll runout lay-up and tied the game at 20 , capping a 7-1 Red Flash run
  • A late lay-in by Gonzaga gave them a 22-20 lead at the end of the first quarter
 
SECOND QUARTER RECAP
  • Another Kroll three was followed by the first of three from Maya Wynn (Reisterstown, Md./McDonogh) as SFU kept pace with the Bulldogs early in the quarter
  • Ace Harrison (Baltimore, MD/Digital Harbor (Maryland)) got going in the quarter with four-straight points to cut the Bulldog lead down to one
  • A Kyasia Duling (Zanesville, Ohio/New Albany (Duquesne)) lay-up did the same but would be the last SFU basket for a three-minute stretch
  • The Bulldogs went on a 10-3 run to close the half, with a Maya Wynn (Reisterstown, Md./McDonogh) jumper stopping the run
  • Gonzaga led 46-37 at the half
 
THIRD QUARTER RECAP
  • The Bulldogs came out scorching in the second half, hitting on five of their first six shots to open a double-digit lead
  • A Courtney Zezza (Plum, Pa./Plum) lay-up stopped the Bulldog run, but would be the lone basket in a four-minute stretch for the Red Flash
  • Gonzaga ripped off an 11-0 run, stopped by a Karson Swogger (Bellwood, PA/Bellwood-Antis) three
  • The Bulldogs' size gave them a 22-2 edge in the paint in the quarter as they led 73-48 after three
FOURTH QUARTER RECAP
  • Another Maya Wynn (Reisterstown, Md./McDonogh) three got the Flash going in the fourth, she finished with 15 points on 6-9 shooting and 3-4 from three
  • An Ace Harrison (Baltimore, MD/Digital Harbor (Maryland)) steal led to an intentional foul and a four-point Red Flash possession
  • SFU kept on the attack throughout the entire fourth quarter, with Kovatch finally getting her shot to fall and scoring 11 of the team's 26 points
  • The Red Flash outscored the Bulldogs 26-24 in the fourth but fell 97-74
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Zykera Rice led the Bulldogs and scorers with 23 points
  • Wynn and Kovatch tied for the team high with 15 but Kovatch was just 6-24 from the field
  • Kroll led the team with five rebounds and three assists
  • Harrison and Wynn each had three steals
  • SFU had a 23-16 edge on points off turnovers
 
The loss drops SFU to 4-6 on the season, while Gonzaga is 6-4. The Red Flash stay on the west coast for Wednesday's tilt against the Portland Pilots. Tip time is set for 1 p.m. PST and 4 p.m. EST.
