Fourth Quarter Surge Leads Tribe Over Red Flash

  • Jessica Kovatch (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) led three players in double figures with 31
  • Caitlyn Kroll (Bridgeport, Ohio/Bridgeport) set a career-high for the second-straight game with 22

LORETTO, PA- A back-and-forth affair that saw 13 lead changes went the way of the William and Mary Tribe who outlasted the Flash 92-86 inside DeGol Arena on Saturday afternoon.
 
Jessica Kovatch (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) had a team-high 31 points, marking the second time in three games she's topped 30 points. Caitlyn Kroll (Bridgeport, Ohio/Bridgeport) upped her career high for the second-straight night, going for 22 points and adding a team high five assists and three steals.
 
The win moves William and Mary to 7-1 on the year while the Red Flash fall to 3-4.
 
HAIGH'S REACTION
"This was a fun and entertaining game," Haigh said. "We had some chances in the fourth quarter and the bounces didn't go our way. At the same time, give credit to William and Mary, that's a good team that made some tough shots in the fourth."
 
TURNING POINT
A 9-0 run by the Tribe erased a 74-69 Red Flash fourth-quarter lead. After the Tribe grabbed a 78-74 lead, the Red Flash could not get within two the rest of the way.
 
FIRST QUARTER RECAP
  • SFU raced out to a 7-1 lead after layups by Ace Harrison (Baltimore, MD/Digital Harbor (Maryland)), Kovatch and Leah Morrow (Columbus, Ohio/Columbus Africentric)
  • William and Mary answered with a 9-2 run to take a 10-9 lead
  • The runs continued as the Red Flash answered back with an 11-2 run to close the quarter
  • Caitlyn Kroll (Bridgeport, Ohio/Bridgeport) had six points during the run including a three-point play to close the quarter
  • SFU led 25-17 after the first 10 minutes 
SECOND QUARTER RECAP
  • A three by Cydney Smith (Port Tobacco, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) answered early baskets by the Tribe to build a nine-point lead
  • The Tribe roared back with a 10-2 run to pull within one
  • A Kovatch three stopped the run and gave SFU back a four-point lead and started an eight-point personal run by Kovatch to stretch the lead back to nine
  • William and Mary again answered back, closing on a 5-0 run to close to within two at the half
  • SFU lead 43-41 at the break 
THIRD QUARTER RECAP
  • The game continued to see-saw in the third quarter with six lead changes
  • A Bianca Boggs three tied the game for the Tribe, she finished with a game-high 33 points
  • Neither team led by more than three in the opening five minutes of the quarter, a Harrison layup put SFU up 58-55
  • A three by Kroll highlighted a 10-2 run for the Flash in the quarter that put them up 68-59
  • William and Mary again had an answer, a Boggs three and a late-tip in at the buzzer capped a run that brought the SFU lead to four
  • The Red Flash took a 70-66 lead into the fourth

FOURTH QUARTER RECAP
  • Four-straight points by Kovatch opened the SFU scoring to put them up 74-69
  • A 9-0 run by the Tribe's Victoria Reynolds followed over the next two minutes, she finished with 22 points
  • A Kroll layup followed and cut the Tribe lead to two at 78-76
  • The Tribe answered baskets by the Red Flash on each of the next three possessions to keep the lead
  • William and Mary pushed the lead to as much as eight after two key SFU turnovers
  • A four-point play from Jessica Kovatch (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) cut the lead to four
  • The Tribe would go 6-6 from the foul line late to ice the game
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • William and Mary outscored the Red Flash 54-32 in the paint
  • SFU out rebounded the Tribe 43-35 and had a 19-7 edge on second-chance points
  • The Tribe turned 22 turnovers into 29 points compared to SFU turning 15 miscues into 19 points
  • The Red Flash shot just 25 percent in the fourth quarter after shooting no worse than 41 percent in any other period
  • The Tribe shot 52 percent for the game
