NEW YORK, NY- For the third consecutive season, the Red Flash will take on the Columbia Lions in a non-conference match-up as they head to the Big Apple for a Wednesday night contest.Â
The Columbia Lions won the first two meetings in nearly identical fashion, winning 82-78 two seasons ago in New York and 84-77 last season at DeGol Arena.Â
ABOUT THE RED FLASH
The Red Flash look to snap a two-game slide as they dropped the final two contests of their three-game week. After a big road win at Cincinnati, SFU fell at Duquesne on Thursday before dropping a back-and-forth affair to William and Mary at home on Saturday. Junior guard
Jessica Kovatch (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) earned her first NEC Player of the Week for her efforts during the three games. She topped 30 points twice (33 at UC, 31 vs W and M) and averaged 25 points and 4 threes per game. She climbed to 11th place on the SFU all-time scoring list and is knocking on the door of the top-10.Â
Joining Kovatch on the awards list was
Caitlyn Kroll (Bridgeport, Ohio/Bridgeport)Â who captured the Rookie of the Week award for the first time this season. The Redshirt freshman guard topped her career high on consecutive nights, going for 18 at Duquesne and then 22 against William and Mary. The Ohio native leads the team in assists at just over three per game and has shown a knack for hitting the boards, recording nearly five per game, good for fourth on the team and tops amongst guards.Â
The Red Flash have consistently hit the glass this season, topping 40 rebounds in each of the last five games. Kyasia Duling has played a big role in that, as she has averaged nearly nine rebounds per game this season and topped 10 rebounds in four of her last five. She will battle Camille Zimmerman on the glass as the senior also averages near nine rebounds per contest for the Lions. They will also try to speed up the Lions, as Columbia averages just 56 shots per game, nearly 20 fewer than the Red Flash. The Lions do average nearly 17 turnovers per game as the Red Flash will look to get out in transition.Â
ABOUT THE LIONS
Columbia comes into the game at 4-5 and winners of their last two including wins over Boston College and Maryland-Baltimore County. SFU will have to try to slow down Camille Zimmerman, who averages 19 points and 9 rebounds per game. She had a monster 20 points and 17 rebound performance in the Lions' win over SFU last season. In their win over UMBC, Zimmerman led the team in points, rebounds and assists with a 12-9-6 effort. She's scored in double figures in 36 straight games. Freshman Riley Casey is the team's second-leading scorer at nearly 10 per contest. The reigning Ivy League Rookie of the Week leads the team with 14 made threes and averages nearly two per game on six attempts. The Red Flash will also have to step out on 6-3 freshman Madison Pack as she leads the team from deep, hitting 11 threes on the season and shooting 36 percent from deep.Â
