Men's Basketball

SFU falls at No. 1 Duke

BOX SCORE Rob Krimmel Quotes | Mike Krzyzewski Quotes

Loretto, Pa. - The Saint Francis men's basketball team (3-5) tested itself against the No. 1 Duke Blue Devils (11-0) in the famed Cameron Indoor Stadium on Tuesday night. The Blue Devils length and size overwhelmed the Red Flash as Saint Francis fell 124-67.

Krimmel's Reaction

"Thanks to coach Krzyzewski and the Duke program for allowing us to play in what I consider the Mecca of college basketball," said head coach Rob Krimmel. "It was something our kids will remember for the rest of their lives. Their size and length comes at you in waves and when they make shots like they did tonight, they are really, really hard to defend. Our hope is that this experience will help us as we get into conference play."

Turning Point

The Blue Devils scored on seven of their first eight offensive possessions to race to a 17-5 lead at the media timeout. Duke maintained its double digit lead the rest of the way.

Inside the Box Score
  • The rebounding discrepancy was the most glaring stat as the Blue Devls corralled 17 offensive rebounds to win the battle on the glass 61-25.
  • Points in the paint were 58-26 and second chance points were 29-2.
  • Saint Francis shot it at a season-low clip of 33.8% from the field (24-71) and was just 7-of-30 from three-point range (23.3%). The Red Flash were just 10-of-39 (25.6%) in the second half.
  • Duke shot 48-of-80 (60.0%) from the field and 15-of-26 (57.7%) from three-point range.
  • After starting 1-for-4 from the foul line, the Red Flash converted its last 11 attempts to go 12-of-15 (80.0%) for the game. Duke made 13-of-19 of its free throws.
  • The Blue Devils finished with a school record 34 assists.
Notes
  • Juniors Jamaal King (Salisbury, Md./Bishop O'Connell (Va.)) and Andre Wolford (Willowick, Ohio/Saint Ignatius) and sophomore Keith Braxton (Glassboro, N.J./The Lawrenceville School) paced the Red Flash with 13 points.
  • Sophomore Deivydas Kuzavas added nine points and five rebounds.
  • Junior Scott Meredith (Pilot Mountain, N.C./Hargrave Military Academy (Va.)) hit his first three shots and finished with eight points.
  • That was the first time SFU had yielded one points to its opponents since Dec. 12, 2016 at Lehigh.
  • Tonight's meeting was just the second time in school history that the Red Flash faced the No. 1 team in the AP Poll. The first occurrence resulted in a 20-point loss to Notre Dame on Jan. 24, 1974.
  • Freshman Marvin Bagley III led all scorers with 21 points and 11 rebounds.
