NEW BRITAIN, Conn. – The Saint Francis men's basketball team placed five players in double-figures as it earned an 80-71 win at Central Connecticut State on Thursday at Detrick Gymnasium. The Red Flash outscored CCSU 49-34 in the second half. SFU improved to 12-14 overall and 9-6 in NEC play, while CCSU dropped to 5-21 overall and 3-12 in conference play.
With the win, the Red Flash picked up its sixth NEC road win this year. That sets a new program record, topping five wins by the 1990-91, 1993-94 and 1997-98 teams. SFU is now 6-2 in NEC road games this year with one more regular season opportunity at Bryant on Saturday.
The Red Flash had five players score in double-figures, led by freshman
Keith Braxton (Glassboro, N.J./The Lawrenceville School)'s 19 points. Braxton hit six-of-seven shots from the floor and hit all six attempts from the free throw line to go with eight rebounds, five assists and two steals. Sophomore
Jamaal King (Salisbury, Md./Bishop O'Connell (Va.)) hit five-of-seven shots, including two threes, for 14 points and added five assists. Fellow sophomore
Josh Nebo (Houston, Texas/Cypress Lakes) had 13 points, four rebounds and two blocks, while senior
Georgios Angelou (Halkida, Greece/Lykeio Kanithou) scored all 11 of his points in the second half. Sophomore
Isaiah Blackmon (Charlotte, N.C./West Charlotte) added 10 points.
Saint Francis shot 58 percent in the game, making 30-of-52 shots, including 9-of-19 from three, and went 11-of-12 from the free throw line. SFU shot 48 percent in the first half and 68 percent in the second half. All 10 SFU players who appeared in the game made at least one shot and SFU assists on 14 of its 30 field goals. SFU scored 37 of its 80 points in the paint.
The Blue Devils were led by Khalen Cumberlander's 25 points, on 9-of-15 shooting including four threes, four rebounds and four assists. Tyson Batiste had 17 points off the bench, hitting five threes, while Tafari Whittingham contributed 13 points and seven boards off the bench.
Central Connecticut State shot 42 percent from the floor, making 24-of-57 shots, including 11-of-22 from three. CCSU made 12-of-18 shots from the free throw line. CCSU won the battle on the boards, 31-26, but its 12 turnovers led to 22 SFU points.
The Red Flash trailed 37-31 at halftime. SFU shot 48 percent in the half, making 13-of-27 shots, but went just two-of-eight from three. SFU was three-of-three from the free throw line. The Red Flash moved the ball well, assisting on 8 of its 13 made shots. SFU was led by Braxton's eight points and four rebounds. King and Nebo each had five points in the half, with nine SFU players hitting at least one shot.
CCSU hit 11-of-26 shots for 42 percent in the half. A big key to CCSU's lead was hitting 10-of-16 free throws. Batiste and Whittingham each had nine points in the half, with Mustafa Jones adding eight points.
A 10-3 run by SFU gave the Red Flash a 20-14 lead with 9:19 left in the first half. Four different SFU players scored during the run, with freshman
Deivydas Kuzavas (Kretinga, Lithuania/St. Mary's Ryken (Md.)) and junior
Daniel Wallace (Suffolk, Va./Nansemond River) each making layups. Sophomore
Andre Wolford (Willowick, Ohio/Saint Ignatius) made a tip-in before Braxton hit two free throws and a jumper.
The Blue Devils responded with a 16-4 run to hold a 30-24 lead with 4:19 to go in the half. Batiste hit two threes during the run, with Jones adding six points on three layups. Whittingham hit four free throws during the stretch.
A layup by Braxton and a three by sophomore
Scott Meredith (Pilot Mountain, N.C./Hargrave Military Academy (Va.)) brought the Red Flash within one, 30-29, with 2:52 left. However CCSU scored seven of the last nine points of the half. Cumberlander hit a three, with Austin Nehls and hitting two free throws and Jones making a jumper.
The Red Flash jumped out to a 46-37 lead with 16:18 to go in the game with a 15-2 run to start the second half. SFU hit its first six shots of the half. SFU again spread out the scoring, with five different players scoring during the run. Braxton started the run with a layup and King followed with a three. Blackmon then gathered a rebound and converted a layup at the other end. Nebo then added a three-point play, making a layup through contact and adding the free throw. Freshman Randall Gaskins Jr. hit a jumper during SFU's next possession and Braxton finished the run with a three.
After Cumberlander and King traded layups, CCSU then scored 13 of the game's next 20 points to take a 56-55 lead with 8:11 to go. Cumberlander heated up, scoring 12 straight points for CCSU, including 8 of the 13 during this stretch. The senior hit two threes and threw down a dunk for his eight points, with Nehls hitting a three and Whittingham making a layup.
A 10-3 run by the Red Flash gave SFU a 71-64 advantage with 3:41 remaining. Angelou started the run by making a layup off a spin move through the lane. Blackmon then hit two fastbreak threes, pulling up from beyond the arc and knocking down the shots. A layup by King pushed the SFU lead to seven.
Cumberlander cut the CCSU deficit to five, 71-66, with 3:02 left but Angelou hit a three a little more than a minute later to extend the SFU lead to eight points. Cumberlander answered with a layup, but two free throws by King and four by Braxton closed out the SFU win.
The Red Flash heads to Smithfield, R.I. on Saturday for a matchup with Bryant. Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. at the Chace Athletic Center, with a broadcast on NEC Front Row. The Bulldogs are 10-18 overall and 7-8 in conference play after an 81-73 win over Robert Morris on Thursday.
