Men’s Basketball Falls 79-75 at Bryant on Saturday

Freshman Keith Braxton had a double-double with 21 points and 11 rebounds

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Saint Francis men's basketball team fell 79-75 at Bryant on Saturday at the Chace Athletic Center.  In a back-and-forth second half, Bryant took control in the final four minutes to seal the win.  SFU dropped to 12-15 overall and 9-7 in the NEC, while Bryant improved to 11-18 overall and 8-8 in conference play.
 
The Red Flash shot 41 percent from the field, hitting 27-of-65 shots, but hit just 5-of-17 from three (29 percent).  SFU went 16-of-25 from the free throw line, but only hit 4 of its last 13 after starting the game 12-12 from the line.  SFU shot 37 percent in the first half and 45 percent in the second half.
 
Freshman Keith Braxton (Glassboro, N.J./The Lawrenceville School) recorded his seventh double-double of the season, with 21 points, on 8-of-15 shooting, and 11 rebounds.  Sophomore Isaiah Blackmon (Charlotte, N.C./West Charlotte) added 15 points and seven rebounds, while sophomore Josh Nebo (Houston, Texas/Cypress Lakes) had 13 points, nine rebounds and three blocks.  Sophomore Jamaal King (Salisbury, Md./Bishop O'Connell (Va.)) had nine points and freshman Randall Gaskins Jr. contributed eight.
 
The Bulldogs hit 44 percent of their shots, going 29-of-66 from the floor.  Bryant made 13-of-32 attempts from three (41 percent) and went 8-of-12 from the free throw line.  Bryant shot 42 percent in the first half and 47 percent in the second half.
 
Bryant was led by freshman Adam Grant, who scored 18 points, making 6-of-10 shots including four threes.  Sophomore Nisre Zouzoua added 13 points, three rebounds and four blocks, while senior Dan Garvin had 12 points and six rebounds.
 
The Red Flash trailed 39-37 at halftime.  SFU shot 37 percent from the floor, making 12-of-32 shots, but went just one-of-six from three.  SFU stayed in the game by hitting 12-of-14 free throws.
 
Braxton led SFU with 13 points in the first half, making four-of-seven shots, and adding five rebounds.  Blackmon and Nebo each had eight points, with Nebo adding four rebounds and two blocks.  King had six points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals, with four points coming from the free throw line.
 
Bryant hit 42 percent of its shots in the half, going 15-36 from the floor, and shot 41 percent from three, where they were 9-of-22.  Grant led the Bulldogs with 14 points in the half, including four threes.  Zouzoua contributed six points, while Marcel Pettway and Townes had four each.
 
SFU scored the first four points of the game, on a layup by King on a backdoor cut and a dunk by Nebo.  Bryant answered with a 13-2 run to hold a 13-6 lead with 16:06 left in the half.  The Bryant run started with a layup by Pettway, who added a dunk a minute later.  The Bulldogs hit three triples during the run, with one each from Grant, Hunter Ware and Zouzoua.
 
Braxton closed the deficit to 13-10 with a layup and two free throws, but Bryant extended its lead to 20-12 with a 7-2 run.  Townes started the run with a layup, with Grant adding a three and a jumper.
 
After a three by Grant pushed Bryant's lead to nine, 31-22, with 5:34 left, the Red Flash responded with an 8-2 run to close the deficit to three, 33-30 with 3:02 remaining.  Blackmon started the run with a layup before King hit two free throws.  Blackmon and Braxton then made layups on back-to-back possessions.
 
A three by Bryant's Taylor McHugh was answered by a Braxton three before Gus Riley hit a triple for the Bulldogs.  Nebo and Blackmon both hit jumpers to close out the half.
 
Saint Francis scored 11 of the first 19 points of the second half, taking a 48-47 lead on a layup by Blackmon with 15:40 to go.  Gaskins Jr. scored SFU's first six points of the half, on two layups and a jumper.  Nebo added a three-point play, getting a layup to go while being fouled and hitting the free throw, before Blackmon's layup.
 
An 11-5 run by Bryant put them ahead, 58-53, with 10:56 left.  Zouzoua hit a three to put the Bulldogs back in front before Garvin scored the next four points, with a dunk and a layup.  McHugh converted a layup before Grant's jumper pushed the lead to five.
 
The Red Flash responded with a 13-4 run to gain a 67-62 lead with 7:05 remaining.  The run started on a layup by Braxton, followed by a layup by Blackmon and a three by Angelou.  Braxton added two more layups and Blackmon hit a three.
 
Bryant answered with an 8-1 run.  Pettway got a layup to go.  After a free throw by Angelou, Bryant's Ikenna Ndugba converted an and-one, making a layup and a free throw.  Zouzoua added a free throw to tie the game before the Bulldogs took a 70-68 lead on a layup by Ndugba with 3:44 left.
 
Braxton tied the game with a jumper a minute later, but Bosko Kostur answered with a three.  Zouzoua hit a free throw to push Bryant's lead to four, 74-70, but Aneglou cut the deficit to two with a pair of free throws with 20 seconds left.  Two free throws by Grant and one by Ndugba extended Bryant's lead to 77-72 with 16 seconds left, but King came down and hit a three from the wing to bring the game back within two.  However, two free throws by Zouzoua sealed the win for Bryant.
 
The Red Flash returns home next weekend to finish the regular season.  SFU takes on Sacred Heart on Thursday at 7 p.m. and Fairleigh Dickinson on Saturday at 1 p.m.  Both games will be broadcast on NEC Front Row.
