LORETTO, Pa. - The Saint Francis men's volleyball battled Harvard in a five-set thriller before falling 3-2 on Saturday night at DeGol Arena in EIVA action. The Flash fell 25-23, 16-25, 25-23, 16-25 and 15-17.
Saint Francis falls to 6-9 overall and 2-4 in conference play, while Harvard improves to 4-5 and 2-2 in the EIVA.
Jeff Hogan (Northern Cambria, Pa./Northern Cambria) led the Flash with 17 kills, while
Stephen Braswell (Manchester, Pa./Northeastern) added 15.
Daniel Ford (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North) finished with a match-high 49 assists, while
Gabe Woffindin (Allentown, Pa./William Allen) recorded 16 digs. Hogan and
Keith Kegerreis (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg) both recorded five blocks.
Saint Francis and Harvard would trade point-for-point through the first 20 points to find themselves tied at 10-10. A Hogan kill gave the Flash match point at 14-13. A Casey White kill and a SFU attack error gave the Crimson set and match point and forced the Flash to take a timeout. Saint Francis would comeback to tie the set at 15-15, but Harvard scored the last two points to take the set and match 17-15.
Saint Francis pounced on Harvard early, jumping out to a 6-0 lead in the opening set off the strength of two kills from Braswell and
Michael Fisher (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley (Pepperdine)). SFU took its biggest lead of the set at 11-4, but Harvard clawed its way back into the set. Two Harvard service aces cut the Flash lead to one at 18-17. Tied 23-23, SFU scored the last two points of the set to win 25-23.
The Red Flash jumped out of the gate in the second set, leading 3-0 and 8-3, but midway through the set, the Crimson scored four unanswered points to hold a 14-11 advantage. Harvard rattled off seven straight points to take a 23-15 lead, and the Crimson never looked back and took the set 25-16.
After trading points in the beginning of the third set, Saint Francis turned a 10-8 deficit into a 12-10 lead after three Harvard errors and a kill from Braswell. Harvard would answer with a 7-1 run to take a 17-15 lead. Out of a SFU timeout, two kills from Hogan highlighted four straight points for the Flash to take a 22-20 lead. A Hogan kill sealed the deal for the Flash, 25-23.
Harvard pulled out to a 12-10 lead in the fourth set and cruised to a 25-16 victory to force a fifth and deciding set.
Saint Francis hits the road next weekend to face University of Charleston and George Mason. Both matches are set for 7 p.m.
