LORETTO, PA- Saint Francis welcomes in the Sacred Heart Pioneers and ESPN 3 for the NEC regular-season finale on Monday night with a 7 p.m. tip-off.
ABOUT THE RED FLASH
The Red Flash ride a two-game winning streak into the regular season finale after a 73-64 win over Fairleigh Dickinson on Saturday's Senior Day. SFU placed three in double figures including a monster day from
Katie Reese (Boonton Township, N.J./Mountain Lakes (Manhattan)) who scored a game-high 23 while dishing out a game-high seven assists and grabbing six rebounds.
Jessica Kovatch (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) added 22 points seven rebounds four assists and two steals.
Courtney Zezza (Plum, Pa./Plum)Â had 16 points and 7 blocks, giving her 92 for the season and breaking Cheril Meier's 33 year-old record of 90 set in the 1983-84 season. Saint Francis shot the ball well, especially from inside the three-point line. The Red Flash put up 34 points in the paint and shot 58 percent inside the arc (18-31). Reese made 5-of-7 from three but the Flash matched their season average of 31 percent from three, shooting 8-26 from deep. Saint Francis overcame 27 offensive rebounds from FDU, which led to 26 second-chance points for the Knights, but SFU allowed FDU to shoot just 30 percent from the field.
ABOUT SACRED HEART
The Pioneers sit at 16-12 overall and 13-4 in the NEC, a game in front of the Red Flash in the NEC. A victory on Monday would clinch the NEC regular-season for the second-straight season. They dropped a 66-56 decision at Robert Morris on Saturday to drop into a first-place tie with the Colonials. Katherine Haines led the Pioneers with a monster game of 23 points and 18 rebounds. She posted 14 points and 16 rebounds for Sacred Heart when SHU defeated SFU 73-63 in Connecticut on New Year's Eve. Haines is one of three Pioneers to average in double figures (Kimmel, Williams join her) and leads the Pioneers with nearly nine rebounds per game. The Red Flash will try to turnover the Pioneers, but it won't be easy, the Pioneers turn it over just 15 times per game.Â
WHAT'S AT STAKE
As mentioned above, Sacred Heart locks up the regular-season and the top-seed in the NEC tournament with a win. The Red Flash can force a three-way tie with Robert Morris and Sacred Heart with a win and a loss by Robert Morris, but can not win the three-way tie breaker. The Red Flash can grab the two-seed with a win and a Central Connecticut win at Bryant. The most likely scenario is SFU ends up the three seed in the tournament, an outcome that can happen win or lose if Bryant holds home court against CCSU.Â
