BROOKLYN, NY- Saint Francis heads back on the road this weekend as they travel to Brooklyn to take on the LIU Brooklyn Blackbirds on Saturday afternoon.
Â
ABOUT THE FLASH
Saint Francis was up ended by in-state rival Robert Morris on Monday night, falling 70-68 at DeGol Arena, snapping the Red Flash's seven-game winning streak. The Flash put four players in double figures but 27 from NEC Player of the Week Anna Niki Stamolamprou and key rebounds in the final minutes clinched the win for the Colonials.
Â
Despite the loss, the Red Flash remain tied atop the Northeast Conference standings at 8-2 with Sacred Heart, who dropped a 61-59 decision to Mount Saint Mary's on Monday.
Â
A big reason for Saint Francis' success in Northeast Conference play is their ability to force empty possessions on defense and get out into their transition game. The Red Flash lead the Northeast Conference in blocks (5.4 per game), steals (11.5 per game), forced turnovers (22 per game), and turnover differentials (+5.5). The Red Flash have turned those turnovers into an average of 19 points per game.
Â
Â
Courtney Zezza (Plum, Pa./Plum) leads the NEC with a 3.0 block per game average while
Ace Harrison (Baltimore, MD/Digital Harbor (Maryland)) leads the conference with a 2.78 steal per game average.
Jessica Kovatch (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) is not far behind at 2.0 steals per game, good for fourth in the NEC. They will look to turnover LIU, who is averaging 17 turnovers per contest in NEC play, SFU forced 21 turnovers in their win over the Blackbirds in January, but converted those miscues into just 13 points.
Â
ABOUT THE BLACKBIRDS
LIU is coming off an impressive road win at Central Connecticut. Dionne Coe led three players in double figures with 18 points on 5-6 shooting in the road win for the Blackbirds. The victory improved LIU to 4-17 on the season and 3-7 in the NEC.
Â
Saint Francis will have to contend with pre-season All-NEC selection Shanovia Dove, who leads the team with 17 points per game. Aja Boyd has come on strong in NEC play, winning back-to-back freshman of the week awards. She has increased her points and rebounding in conference play, leading the Blackbirds at nearly eight boards per game to go along with 13 points. The Blackbirds are an athletic team who will attack the Saint Francis press and will challenge the Red Flash shooters on defense. In their first meeting, SFU was held to just 20 percent shooting in the first quarter and just 33 percent for the game.
Â
However, LIU only averages eight assists per game and shoots just 35 percent from the field during NEC play. That ended up being their downfall in the first meeting between the teams. The Red Flash held LIU without a field goal for a pair of long stretches in the second half and limited them to just 24 second-half points. They will look to do the same this time around.
