Men’s Basketball Falls In Overtime, 76-74, Against Wagner

LORETTO, Pa. – The Saint Francis men's basketball team fell 76-74 in a tough overtime loss against Wagner on Thursday night at DeGol Arena.  Wagner made a go-ahead layup with 2.5 seconds left, with SFU missing a three at the buzzer.  The Red Flash is now 11-13 overall and 8-5 in NEC play, while Wagner improved to 12-11 overall and 8-5 in conference play.
 
The game went into overtime when sophomore Jamaal King (Salisbury, Md./Bishop O'Connell (Va.)) hit three free throws with 10 seconds left after being fouled on a three attempt.  A minute into overtime, Wagner's Connor Ferrell knocked down an off-balance three.  SFU cut the deficit to one on a layup by freshman Keith Braxton (Glassboro, N.J./The Lawrenceville School) and took the lead on a steal-and-layup by King with 3:01 left. 
 
The Seahawks tied the game on a free throw by Corey Henson and re-took the lead, 72-69, on a three by JoJo Cooper with 1:30 to go.  A three by sophomore Isaiah Blackmon (Charlotte, N.C./West Charlotte) hit a three from the top of the key to tie it up again before Henson hit a go-ahead jumper.  After a layup by Nebo to tie the game, Wagner's Mike Aaman answered with a layup on a spin move towards the baseline with 2.5 seconds to go.  King got the in-bounds pass and got a three off, but the ball hit the rim and bounced off.
 
Nebo led the Red Flash with 15 points, on 7-of-13 shooting, 15 rebounds and five blocks.  King added 13 points and four assists, while Braxton had 12 points, seven boards and four assists.  Freshman Randall Gaskins Jr. contributed 10 points and three steals.  Sophomore Andre Wolford (Willowick, Ohio/Saint Ignatius) hit three triples off the bench for nine points, while senior Georgios Angelou (Halkida, Greece/Lykeio Kanithou) had eight points, with two threes, and Blackmon had seven points.
 
Saint Francis shot 44 percent from the field, making 29-of-66 attempts, but went just 6-of-19 from three (31 percent).  SFU was 10-of-14 from the free throw line for 71 percent.  SFU shot 50 percent in the first half and 36 percent in the second half, before hitting four-of-seven shots in overtime (57 percent).  SFU scored 45 of its 74 points in the paint.
 
Aaman led Wagner with 16 points, on 11-of-18 shooting, 13 rebounds and three blocks.  Henson added 13 points and five assist, while Cooper and Michael Carey each had 12 points.  Wagner shot 44 percent for the game, but just 4-of-15 from three (27 percent) and went 10-of-12 from the free throw line (83 percent).  Wagner won the battle on the boards, 42-36, and collected 20 offensive rebounds.
 
The Red Flash trailed 35-31 at halftime.  Braxton and Wolford led SFU with six points each in a balanced-scoring half.  Angelou added five points, while Blackmon, Gaskins and Nebo each had four.  Nebo added three rebounds and four blocks.  SFU shot 50 percent in the half, making 13-of-26 shots and three-of-six three-point attempts.
 
Aaman had 16 points and eight rebounds in the half, making 7-of-10 shots.  Henson had six points and Cooper added five.  Wagner hit 46 percent of its shots in the half, making 16-of-35 looks.
 
Wagner started the game on a 10-2 run, with Aaman scoring the first eight points of the game and Cooper hitting a jumper.
 
Saint Francis answered with its own 10-2 run to tie the game with 12:15 left in the half.  Nebo started the run with a layup before Blackmon scored the next four points, on layups.  Then it was Braxton's turn to lay it in as he converted on back-to-back possessions. 
 
A 12-2 run by Wagner later in the half gave the Seahawks a seven-point advantage, 29-22, with 5:42 to go in the half.  Aaman and Ferrell each had four points during that stretch, with Amaan hitting a layup and two free throws and Ferrell hitting two jumpers.  Carey also had a layup.
 
With a 9-2 run, SFU tied the score at 31-31 with 2:14 left in the half.  Gaskins Jr. sparked the run with a jumper.  Wolford hit a three two possessions later, with Gaskins Jr. hitting another jumper on the next possession.  A layup by King evened the game.  However, two jumpers by Aaman gave Wagner the advantage at the half.
 
Saint Francis scored the first seven points of the second half to take a 38-35 lead with 16:42 left.  Nebo had a pair of layups, with the second part of a three-point play, and Braxton added a layup after a steal by Gaskins Jr.
 
However, Wagner responded by scoring 14 of the game's next 17 points to hold a 49-41 lead with 10:33 to go.  Carey led the Seahawks with six points during the run, with two layups and a jumper.  Henson added four points, while Aaman and A.J. Sumbry each had two.
 
The teams traded two-point possessions before a three by Wolford sparked a nine-point run, which ended in a 56-55 SFU lead.  Gaskins hit a free throw and then hit again from the charity stripe after being fouled on a layup to complete a three-point play.
 
The Seahawks built their lead back to six points, 62-56, with 2:14 to go after a layup by Carey, two free throws by Aaman and a three by Cooper. 
 
Gaskins and Braxton made layups on back-to-back possessions to cut the deficit to 62-60 with 1:27 remaining.  Ferrell answered with two free throws to put Wagner back up by four.
 
A layup by Nebo again cut the Wagner lead to two.  After Cooper was fouled by King, he missed the first free throw by made the second. 
 
King pulled up for a three on the other end, which he missed but Braxton grabbed the rebound and kicked it back out to King, who was fouled on this three attempt.  King then hit three straight free throws to tie the game at 65-65 with 10 seconds remaining.  A missed three by Henson sent the game into overtime.
 
The Red Flash hosts Mount St. Mary's on Saturday for another key NEC matchup.  Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. on NEC Front Row.  The Mount leads the NEC with an 11-2 record in conference play.
