Buies Creek, NC- The Saint Francis Red Flash used spirited defense and a balanced offense to knock off the Campbell Camels on Thursday night in the first round of the Women's Basketball Invitational (WBI).Â
The victory is the first post-season win for the Red Flash in program history and the first post-season win for the Northeast Conference in women's basketball history. The victory moves SFU into the second round of the WBI where they'll host Wisconsin-Milwaukee at 2 p.m. on Sunday.Â
The Red Flash forced 26 Camel turnovers, leading to 29 points in the victory. The Flash had 17 steals in Thursday's win, led by
Ace Harrison (Baltimore, MD/Digital Harbor (Maryland))'s six and
Samiah Bethel (Jacksonville, Fla./Potter's House Christian Academy)'s five. Offensively,
Maya Wynn (Reisterstown, Md./McDonogh) went for 20 points and tied a WBI record with six made threes.
Jessica Kovatch (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg)Â matched Wynn with 20 while
Katie Reese (Boonton Township, N.J./Mountain Lakes (Manhattan)) had 14 and Bethel had 12 to place four players in double figures.Â
Both teams looked to shake off the rust from the conference tournament lay-off as neither team had a field goal in the first three minutes of the game. The Flash defense then forced steals on three-straight possessions to storm out to a 9-1 lead and force a Campbell timeout. The lead grew to as many as 10 in the first quarter as SFU held the Camels without a field goal for the first eight minutes of the game. Wynn's first three pointer of the game came with eight seconds left in the quarter and ended a Camel run and put SFU up 21-13 at the end of the first quarter.Â
A 5-0 run in the second quarter again prompted a Camel timeout as the Red Flash lead hit the high-water mark of 13 at 26-13. The Camels would battle back and close within three, using a 12-2 run to cut the SFU lead to three. That would be as close as the Camels would get in the first half, Kovatch would go on a personal 6-0 run with three-straight lay-ins, capping a 8-0 run that brought the lead back out to double figures. A pair of late Reese free throws put SFU up 38-28 at the intermission.Â
The second half start mirrored the first as neither team scored for the first three minutes. A
Maya Wynn (Reisterstown, Md./McDonogh) three put SFU back up 13 before the Camels got white hot. Campbell hit on their next four shots, including a pair of threes as they ripped off 13 straight points to tie the game at 41. A clutch Wynn three out of the media timeout stopped the run and the Flash rebuilt a five-point advantage, only see the Camels comeback to tie the game again. Camels would continue to play catch-up with the Flash, re-tying the game twice more in the quarter before SFU got a steal-and-score from
Samiah Bethel (Jacksonville, Fla./Potter's House Christian Academy) and took a 55-51 lead into the fourth.Â
The Camels would officially catch-up, erasing a five-point SFU lead with a 6-0 run to take their first lead of the second half with just over six minutes remaining. It would be the only Camel lead of the second half. SFU would answer with a 12-4 run that put them up 70-63 with just over three minutes to go. Kovatch again went on a personal 6-0 run during the spurt that ultimately put the game out of reach. The Flash would salt the game away from the foul line going 8-10 from the charity stripe in the fourth quarter to earn the win.Â
Campbell won the battle on the glass 56-36 including 17-4 on the offensive end. Despite the discrepancy, SFU only surrendered eight second-chance points, earning five of their own. Brianna Cribb had a game-high 16 boards for the Camels while
Ace Harrison (Baltimore, MD/Digital Harbor (Maryland)) had nine for the Red Flash. Summer Price had a game high 22 for Campbell but it came on 10-26 shooting.Â
The win moves SFU to 17-14 on the season while Campbell's campaign ends at 21-10. The Red Flash will take on the Panthers of UW-Milwaukee on Sunday. It will be the first meeting between the teams. UW-Milwaukee advanced to the second round after defeating Southern Illinois on Wednesday. Tip time is set for 2 p.m. from DeGol Arena.Â
