BALTIMORE, Md. – A season that included an NEC Championship game appearance and the program's sixth postseason appearance ever ended for the Saint Francis Men's Basketball team in the Second Round of the CollegeInsiders.com Tournament. The Red Flash fell 87-79 at UMBC on Saturday at RAC Arena. Saint Francis, led by Head Coach
Rob Krimmel, ended the season with a 17-17 record. UMBC improved to 20-12 this year.
The Red Flash shot 52 percent for the game, making 32-of-62 attempts. SFU hit 11-of-27 looks from three for 41 percent. SFU made four-of-nine from the free throw line. SFU shot 48 percent in the first half and 55 percent in the second half.
Sophomore
Isaiah Blackmon (Charlotte, N.C./West Charlotte) led Saint Francis with 16 points, on 6-of-10 shooting including four threes. Blackmon added six rebounds and two assists. Sophomore
Josh Nebo (Houston, Texas/Cypress Lakes) made 6-of-10 shots for 14 points and had seven rebounds and a block. Fellow sophomore
Jamaal King (Salisbury, Md./Bishop O'Connell (Va.)) had 14 points, on 5-of-12 shooting, five assists and two steals. Freshman
Keith Braxton (Glassboro, N.J./The Lawrenceville School) had 11 points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals. Senior
Patrick Wrencher (West Chester, Ohio/Archbishop Moeller) had eight points off the bench.
UMBC made 47 percent of its shot attempts, hitting 30-of-64 from the field. The Retrievers hit 13-of-30 looks from three (43 percent) and 14-of-17 from the free-throw line (82 percent). UMBC shot 45 percent in the first half and 50 percent in the second half.
Will Darley led the Retrievers with 30 points, hitting 9-of-16 from the field and five threes. K.J. Maura had 14 points, on four-of-six shooting, four rebounds and five assists. Jairus Lyles recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds to go with four assists. Rodney Elliott had 11 points, with three triples, off the bench.
The Red Flash trailed 46-38 at halftime. Saint Francis shot 48 percent from the floor, making 15-of-31 shots, including 6-of-13 from three (46 percent). SFU was two-of-four from the free throw line. SFU assisted on 10 of its 15 shots made.
Nebo led the Red Flash with 11 points in the half, making five-of-seven shot attempts, including his first three attempt and make of the year. He added five rebounds and a block. Blackmon contributed eight points, on three-of-five shooting and two threes, five rebounds and two assists. Freshman Randall Gaskins Jr. and Wrencher each had four points.
UMBC made 45 percent of its shots, hitting 17-of-38 looks. The Retrievers hit nine threes on 21 attempts for a 43 percent clip and went three-of-five from the free throw line. Darley led the Retrievers with 17 points, hitting his first six shots of the game, including five threes. Lyles added 10 points, on four-of-seven shooting, and four rebounds. Sherburne had seven points and three boards.
The Red Flash held a 7-5 lead with 17:16 to go in the first half, after jumpers by Gaskins and Nebo and a three by Nebo, but UMBC responded with a 10-0 run to take a 15-7 lead with 15:26 to go in the half. Lyles started the run with a three and a layup before Darley knocked down a three and a jumper.
However, Saint Francis scored 15 of the game's next 22 points to tie the game at 22-22 with 9:41 left in the half. The run included threes by Blackmon, Braxton and Wolford, with Wolford's tying the game as part of an 8-0 stretch. Nebo hit a jumper, while Wrencher added a hook shot and Blackmon made a layup.
Darley hit three straight threes and to help UMBC extend its lead back to eight, 32-24, with 7:13 left. Arkel Lamar added a free throw. A jumper by Nebo was answered by an Elliott three. Meredith hit a three to cut the deficit to six, but a layup by Elliott and a jumper by Joe Sherburne extended the UMBC lead to 10, 39-29, with 5:03 to go.
Saint Francis cut the deficit to seven, 52-45, with a 7-2 run early in the second half. King knocked down a three and a layup before Nebo hit a jumper.
However, UMBC answered with a 10-1 run to push its lead to 62-46 with 12:04 remaining. Sam Schweitz started the run with a layup before Jourdan Grant converted a three-point play with a layup and a free throw. Darley conntected on two free throws before Elliott concluded the run with a three.
The Red Flash responded with a 12-0 run to cut the UMBC lead to 62-58 with 8:47 left. Senior
Georgios Angelou (Halkida, Greece/Lykeio Kanithou) hit a three before Braxton made a putback layup. On the next SFU possession, Wrencher got a layup to go. Braxton then got a steal and took it the length of the floor for a dunk. Blackmon ended the run with a three.
A three by Elliott and jumper and a free throw by Darley pushed UMBC's lead back to eight, 68-60, with 7:03 left. However, SFU cut the deficit to just two with layups by Blackmon, King and Braxton.
However, Maura answered with a three to spark a 14-3 UMBC run to extend its lead to 82-69 with 2:21 to go. Darley hit three free throws after being fouled on a three before Schweitz converted a three-point play. Schweitz added another layup during the run, with a Maura three concluding it.
