SFU Ends Non-Con with Red Flash Mini Sweep

LORETTO, PA- The Red Flash closed out their non-con with a sweep of the Red Flash mini tournament, defeating Washington and Jefferson 13-7 and Penn State-Behrend 16-7 at the Stokes Natatorium on Saturday.
 
 
WASHINGTON AND JEFFERSON MATCH (Box Score)
The Red Flash used a strong defensive effort in the second half to knock off the Washington and Jefferson Presidents 13-7.
 
Emily Wickenheiser (Mechanicsburg, Pa/Cumberland Valley) and Kelly Fehr (Erie, Pa/Villa Maria Academy) each scored four times to lead the Red Flash offense while Kate Wilke (Burbank, Calif./Burroughs) made nine saves and had five steals to lead the defense.
 
It was a game of runs in the first quarter as SFU scored on their first three shots of the game, two by Fehr and one by Wickenheiser to take a 3-0 lead just two minutes in. The Presidents would battle back, scoring four unanswered goals in three minutes to take a 5-4 lead. Wickenheiser's second of the match answered and the teams would be tied at 5 after one.
 
The Red Flash would lock up defensively after W and J took a 6-5 lead early in the second quarter. Kelly Fehr (Erie, Pa/Villa Maria Academy) cashed in on a power play to tie the match at six and Wickenheiser gave SFU the lead for good with another power-play goal to make it 7-6. Tina Bonilla followed suit 30 seconds later to give the Red Flash an 8-6 halftime lead.
 
Saint Francis stormed out of the second half gate, outscoring the Presidents 4-0 in the third. Lani Merrill (San Clemente, Calif. /San Clemente (Saddleback College)) was the force behind the offense, scoring an early goal to stretch the lead to three and then converting on a penalty shot that she drew midway through the quarter. Kelsey Gring (Sinking Spring, Pa/Wilson) and Wickenheiser also added tallies as the Flash began to pull away in the third and took a 12-6 lead into the fourth. The Flash continued to stymie the Presidents through the fourth, recording six steals and a pair of saves. Each team scored a late goal to round out the scoring but SFU came away with their ninth win of the year.
 
SFU outshot W and J 30-22 and the Red Flash went 2-8 on the power play and converted their only penalty shot. The Presidents went 1-8 on the power play and were led in scoring by Madison Nervig's two goals and three assists. The win moved SFU to 9-12 on the season while Washington and Jefferson fell to 1-3.
 
PSU-BEHREND GAME  (Box Score)
SFU wasted no time against the Lions of Penn-State Behrend, scoring on their first four shots and leading 4-0 after five minutes. The Flash capitalized on their lone powerplay and Wickenheiser had two of her four goals in the run. The Lions would get on the board on a power play goal but the Red Flash countered with two more on goals from Gring and Wickenheiser's third to lead 6-1 after one.
 
Saint Francis kept the pressure on in the second, scoring three more times while Kate Wilke (Burbank, Calif./Burroughs) made four saves to keep PSU off the board. Additionally, the Red Flash defense notched six steals, as the Lions were held off the board in the second as SFU led 9-1 at the break.
 
Kelsey Gring (Sinking Spring, Pa/Wilson) would score twice more in the third to lead the SFU offense including a power-play goal. Melani Aghazarian (Glendale, Calif./Glendale (La Valley College)) also added a tally with the man advantage as the Red Flash went 4-10 on the power play in the second game on Saturday. The Lions would score twice on the power play in the third including a penalty shot goal but SFU outscored them 5-3 in the third and led 14-4 after three.
 
Erin O'Neill (Landsdale, Pa/North Penn) came into play goal in the fourth, notching four saves in relief of Wilke. Kaitlyn Nguyen (Annandale, Va/Bishop Ireton) scored her first goal as a member of the Red Flash in the final frame, capping off a sweep of the Red Flash Mini Tournament with a 16-7 triumph in the nightcap.
 
SFU now sits at 10-12 on the season while PSU-Behrend is 1-8 after suffering a 12-10 OT loss to Washington and Jefferson in the middle game on Saturday. The Red Flash now turn to conference play after a weekend off. The CWPA schedule starts at Bucknell on April 1st where SFU will face Princeton and Michigan on Saturday and the host Bison on Sunday.
